Mornin Smufles
It was a working holiday - half burning sun and then storms and rain Back to the drudgery this week
and the rain is coming back
Belly Good
smurfles Posted Jul 4, 2005
The rain's arrived here,,it's a horrible,dull,drab,morning..and a grey sky to go with it all.
We're getting too used to the sunshine,i suppose we need a reminder of what winters likejust so we don't forget our "normal" english weather!!
The greenhouse looks good though, and we've lots of tomatoes, cucumbers just starting, and the plants are huge

Wooooo good for you - stuff always tastes better when it's just out of the home grown patch eh!
Maybe summer has finished already eh!

Moving On Posted Jul 4, 2005
Coitenly has down here, thats for sure. Grey skies, lashings of rain... but it's as muggy as an armpit, too. Horrible stuff!
Right, just back from watching Wendy bankrupt her husband again... a nice way to spend a morning. I found some rye bread in Lidl's (very partial to rye bread, I am) so its that and some feta and tomatoes for lunch in a minute.
Home grown food... m'mmm cannent beat it, can you? One day, when I'm big and rich I shall find somewhere with a garden that has rasied beds and a sense of humour and get back into it. I do miss me home grown runner beans - they don't taste right, out of the green grocers, even.
Out of interest, Smurfles -sorry I missed ya, love - what are you going to do with the - apart from the obvious Hallowe'en jobby with the candle?

True... bu I've always eaten with my eyes, sort of thing - I think pumpkin pulp *looks* yukky myself, and I'd be a bit wary of eating it - what's it taste of - and whats the texture like? (And don't say "pumpkin"!)
And how d'you cook it?
Come to think of it, is it a savoury or a sweet thing?
And...er... is it worth the effort once you've fiddled around with it?
I know(hangs head with embarrassment) I'm a wuss really, amn't I?
Belly Good
Shhhhh Posted Jul 5, 2005
maybe you're not a wuss - you're just ly challenged ?
It's just sweet - bordering on the cusp though
Must admit it's not one my favorites - but that makes it a challenge eh!
I vaguely remember doing a pie with almonds and involved - but to be honest that was back at the hotel so it's an eon away
Texture sort of mashed neeps sorta thing

H'mmm - sounds sort of a filler-up bland sort of a thing - ballast.
I seem to remember seeing a recipe for pumpkin jam somewhere.
Yeah - I think ly challenged is about right.
And to be honest, I think I@d probably pass on the faffing around with it, too. I'm off cooking at the moment. Haven't got any inspiration, don't feel like cooking, and anything I *do* get round to burning is mediocre and bleugh
Seem to be living off strawberries, nectarines and bananas lately.
Oh yes! And rye bread!
Would you know how to make the starter yeast for that, by any small chance?
Belly Good
Shhhhh Posted Jul 5, 2005
yup filler is about right
The cooking thing seems to come in fits and starts eh! specially when there's other things happening.
I reckon the best starter yeast is the bought stuff - you've got to have somewhere to start eh!

Can't seem to find a "ready made" rye dough starter - I possibly should have said "Sour Dough" bread - like the cowboys used to eat, when they were travelling... as I understand it, they used to keep a lump of raw dough from the previous day's batch, and use it it "rise" the new day's bread. And then hold onto a raw lump of that days batch for the following day... and so on....
I used to do it in Eire - one of my German friends gave me a lump of starter dough to get going. It worked a treat when I had a range (aga, to you).
Not surprisingly, it got lost in one of my moves
Thats the starter I meant. You've got to ferment the rye flour, somehow - but I've forgotten the knack!
Any idea how it's done, S'hhh?

Good morning!
I know they do, Sal... but I wanted to have a little bit of a play and a boast!
But it IS a lot of faffing about, I agree!
You're up bright and early - what you doing today? I've got to go out in a while - food shopping, and then the needle lady, again.

Good morning ev,and Shhh.
I don't know what got me up so early....not good for me to be up in the middle of the night. That's how it feels anyway.
The hairdresser day today, and she keeps catching me still on here,so i thought i'd get a head start today.
I haven't got the patience for baking bread anymore, but give me creative stuff, like card making, and it keeps me occupied for ages!!!
Anything i can sit down to really..i'm getting so lazy.

In which case, you're in good company, Smurfles (or I am!) I read virtually anything. I like your cards, I think they're great - really pretty.
Once I've gotten bored with painting and stencilling - probably when all my nail varnish has run out - I'll have to find something else to do.
Oh - before I forget - I texted Granny last night - so far haven't had a reply, but I know she has her mobile off most of the time!

Mornin
must admit I've resorted to a machine thingy - very handy - chuck it in and type the output sorta thing
I would guess the only place to get proper yeast is an old fashioned bakers
Belly Good
smurfles Posted Jul 5, 2005
I've seen yeast at asda Shhh.
So you bake bread as well.a man of many talents eh!
I hope you're going to the london meet......so we can say hello.

smurfles Posted Jul 5, 2005
I don't know who's going yet ev,butit would be nice to meet some people ,and it's the ideal opportunity. We don't venture so far afield ,except for when we go on hols, but i think a lot of people i chat to are qute near ,and it would be nice to meet them.
Having said that we won't be doing the pub bit..too much for me!
Belly Good
Moving On Posted Jul 5, 2005
If there's going to be some I know, then I may well venture up myself - tho it's a 3 hr schlep on the train I reckon it'd be well worth it. Like you say, there's all these written voices and no faces - it'd be nice to match them all up!
None too sure about the pub afterwards meself, either... but a picnic in the park'd be nice - I'm sure I could be persuade to bring some wine and plastic cups!
After all, why waste valuable drinking time, waiting for the pubs to open, eh?

smurfles Posted Jul 5, 2005
