Or even across the living room. Me at one end on the big computer and Noggin sitting on the sofa with the laptop. I must say I like the idea of him ironing my clothes . . .
Just waiting for the final US election results, but so far it doesn't look too hopeful.

What is XP Service Pack? It has downloaded itself on my automatic Windows Updates thingy but before installing it there is a warning to make a security copy, which I don't know how to do. Anyhow, it's been sitting here for a few weeks now and I'm not sure if I should try installing it or not.

Morning all,
Or perhaps not; see - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3759948.stm
Service Pack 2, not to be confused with Service Pack 1, is an update for Windows XP which improves online security and offers a number of upgrades. It is a big file to download so unless you're on broadband it is probably best to get a copy on CD ROM. Various computer magazines have been giving it away free for the past couple of months or you can order one from Microsoft for the cost of postage.
On the whole I imagine it is to be recommended but I have heard that it can interfere with (bugger up) some older device drivers. It also includes its own anti viral and firewall applications which are activated by default. This means you should deactivate your own versions before installing the upgrade and then deactivate the ones in SP2 before reactivating your own.
This looks like a question for 'Ask H2G2' perhaps.
Meanwhile my ADSL modem has arrived and the connection should be sorted out by Monday.
You mean to say that Noggin *doesn't* iron your clothes? You're too soft on him.

if it aint broke dont fix it i think i used system restore and took it it off again after as it slowed machine down to much,
az makeing security copy is same as copying a cd with music only your copying data, i back mine up (file setting transfer) on to removeable hard disc once a year saved my bacon more than once.
before you load it go in to accessorie click on file and settings transfer then transfer to cd roms, then you have copy of hard drive on cd, depending on sice of hard drive you may need up to 10 cds .
i suspect servise pack two has a lot to do with "java" and other bits
of code tht need patching or disabling ,must get on

Aaaargh!
I tried signing in on Noggin's computer yesterday and something went amiss with my password and secret question, so now my original page is blocked until further notice!
Hope it gets sorted out soon as it's quite tiresome to be going back and forth between two pages.
How is everybody today?

Hi everybody,
Sorry to hear about your problems with your sign-on. I hope they get it sorted soon. What will you do with your spare user number? You could change the name and adopt a whole different personality and pretend it's not you perhaps. Your new number is over a million so I guess somebody got the magic number. Do we know who it was?
I've got a couple of books on Java and PHP and will be studying them for a while. I'll get one on HTML or XML shortly. There are also some useful books on web design for beginners and a monthly web designer magazine so I'll have plenty to read if nothing else. This may take some time so I'd better look for a proper job in the meantime.
Should get our broadband sorted soon then I can download some of the developers tools and have a play with the languages.

Well, for now I'm just happy that I can post again!
Noggin spent all day yesterday on Webmonkey and says it's very interesting.
Meanwhile, I have no idea what all this 'language biz' is about.

Fathom Posted Nov 4, 2004
Yes indeed, Webmonkey is interesting.
I'm sure Noggin can explain the intricacies of HTML etc if you want him to but then I'm also sure you already know more about this than you're letting on. I bet it's all 'graphic user interfaces' and 'object oriented implementations' in your house.
It's raining and windy here now and I'm going to get wet going home.

Nah, it's more like 'did you feed the cat on the roof?' and 'eat in or tapas?'
Oh, and regular heated debates about Kant and Wittgenstein.

Yes, I've been lurking there since yesterday, though just read the last bit now. It seems that Della is developing a sense of humour about Hoo anyhow.
Meanwhile, not sure what to do about this weekend. We were once again planning to go to Gibraltar and have arranged to borrow my friend's car but the forecast looks iffy. Today it is totally p*ssing down but it's supposed to clear up by mid-day tomorrow. But you know, what if it doesn't???
The plan is to spend tomorrow in Gibraltar (shopping! ) and then drive through Tarifa over to a little beach village called Bolonia and spend the night. The next morning we wanted to visit the Roman ruins there, which are quite spectacular and go straight down to the beach. Then after that, follow the coast and have lunch in another lovely beach village I know (Conil - my favourite beach) before heading home again.
What to do, what to do . . .

Just got a weird notice pop up on my screen saying there is some problem with my Disk Defragmenter Module. What is this? Should I be concerned?
az
clutching hand in head
Fathom Posted Nov 5, 2004
That is weird.
Since the disc defragmenter is something you might use once a year I don't expect it's going to cause too many problems. You might want to run your antivirus utility just in case.
Try this:
hold down Ctrl-F2 and Alt-Insert while pressing the space bar twice.
Can't do it? Neither could I
According to the Beeb the weather in Gibraltar tomorrow is 'sunny intervals'. Go anyway. Have fun.

Looks like we are probably going, though we can now wait until morning to decide. Originally we were going to pick up Carmen's car this evening (she lives just outside Seville) but as she has to come into town early tomorrow morning she said - providing the weather looks good for us - she can drop off the car and then get her husband to pick her up later.
Isn't she wonderful?
Well, off to pack my overnight bag, change the cat sand, water the plants, polish my shoes, and, and, and . . .
