2003 02 12 Hathor - My first braindump
Posted Feb 12, 2003
Hathor dates back as far as the archaic or possibly even pre-dynastic times and holds quite an important position in Egypt. She was born in Nubia as ‘a blood thirsty lioness’ and is seen as the mother of her father, daughter of her son, the wife and daughter to Ra. If this makes little sense, Hathor was a woman of many guises.
As a goddess Hathor represented many things. The Greeks saw her as pleasure, love, and fertility (the Egyptian equivalent of the Aphrodite.) To the Egyptians she was the ideal mother, a woman of love and pleasure, lady of heaven, mistress of the underworld (where she dispensers water to the souls of the dead from the branches of a palm tree), a moon goddess, the sky Goddess, the Goddess of the East, the Goddess of the West, a cosmic deity, an agricultural goddess, and a solar deity.
Hathor was represented graphically as a woman bearing the sun between two cow's horns. The original form under which she was worshipped was that of the cow, with a human head and a kind broad face (bovine in look).
As with many important gods there is a little story that is associated with Hathor --
The Sun God Ra was the creator of men and all things -- he ruled over men and the gods. As Ra grew old reverence gave way to mockery so Ra gathered his closest gods (including Hathor). Nuts suggestion as to how Ra could deal was those that offended him was to wipe them from the face of the earth. Men fled as soon as Ra appeared, so he sent Hathor to do his bidding. When she returned she confessed she had enjoyed killing the men and Ra became worried the Hathor may actually slay the rest of the human kind. To prevent this Ra ordered the making seven thousand jars of barley brew laced with poison to be left where Hathor would see it when she went too kill mankind. The brew was poured out onto the fields. When Hathor reached the place where the fields were flooded with the brew she was pleased. She drank so deeply that she became drunk and became too inebriated to kill.

2003 02 10 and is trouble knocking?

I went to sleep last night, listenning to a play on Radio 4's archive that I had missed earlier in the week, which means going to bed leaving my PC connected to the internet. My Internet package is all inclusive and I have a pretty sound firewall - so it isnt a problem.
Well thats what I thought.
When I woke up this morning I was no longer online - that was ok because I could restart my PC. No, that didnt work. Despite several different attempts to log on I was getting nowhere. So I went to work. I got home from work at about 5 tonight and tried again. No luck. I walked away in disgust. Why do i keep getting messages about dialing tones when DSL doesnt have any?
Anyway....
After a short nap on the sofa (the news can do that to me) I woke up at 7.30 and decided to give it another try. This time it was different I accessed the net. I came here to see what was going on, and found myself subscribed to a number of conversations in which I hadn't posted - and (no offence to the author) I had no interest in. In fact 'I wasnt there guv'.
So, did someone reak havoc as me last night? are there loads of messages around the place from me but not from me? Wouldnt be too hard to unsubscribe to them! Is this why I was disconnected overnight? My firewall should have protected me from that kind of thing, but I am truly bemused and beginning to get that Marvin feeling.
NOW I find I also have a smiley addiction - too.

Am I alone in my universe?
Posted Feb 9, 2003
I have been here a couple of days and encountered some really nice people - inviting many of them back to my place for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.... but are these people my friends or merely my aquaintences?
It is a fine line to draw even though the tide keeps washing it away. I think I need some hard and fast rules. Anyone who replies to this journal entry will be classed as a friend and added to my list of friends. I suspect that any other true friend will make themselves known over time.
My only dilemma is who do I trust enough to hold my while I am busy.

A new journal begins

Why I came to H2G2 is a mystery even to me - so don’t ask. As a hitchhiker fan from my teens I guess it was inevitable that some point in my life I would end up aligning myself. 'Why now?' and 'What value can I add?' are another two unanswerable questions right now. Given time I guess I will find my personal space to document. (Right now I am only fit to write the ramblings of a deranged mind.)
Oh well, I guess I'll get it done before the universe implodes.
