I'd personally say that a holistic view of seismology is to be encouraged. For example, when the Chinese made their famous successful earthquake prediction, back in 1976, we were getting seismic manifestations in the Riverside, California area where I was living at the time for several weeks afterward, elsewhere in the Pacific rim system.
As a rule, if there's elevated activity anywhere along a rift system, that increases the potential over the entirety of it.
Earthquakes are often preceded by either visual signs (quarry lights, the wheels of Poseidon) or changes in ground water water table levels. They're also often associated with ionizing haze and unusual weather like tropical storm clouds (earthquake weather).

Apparently in China, a pool disappeared, just sucked down in to the earth and a lot of animals were spooked. There are complaints that they didn't have enough warning, but I doubt they could have one much anyway, only cause more chaos and panic.

Aye. It'd be just like in San Francisco. The overpass collapsed and killed loads of people.

Quake safety engineering is yet another issue. When the Oakland Bay Bridge pancaked (a triple decker multilane), many people were trapped and some killed. There was a similar accident during the Northridge quake when an overpass of the "5" freeway collapsed. With that one, since it hit during a period of minimal traffic, there were no human mishaps except for one police officer who was unable to stop in time when the overpass collapsed, and survived the fall.
An answer to that is cantilever construction, where rather than building spans bridging the gaps between supporting pylons (which can pancake), instead, the spans are built balanced on the supporting pylons and joined in the middle of the gap between them.

hi all
-
from the news i saw in the last few days, it said that most of the schools that collapsed had been cut back on, and the ones that built them would be charged with murder, and will most certainly face the death penalty.
-
it wont help the families or bring the children back, just the trials will prolong the parents agony. its a disaster that wont go away even after they try to rebuild, some towns are not being rebuilt for ages, jim

hi Websailor
i'm happy to be a friend with you too! however, for the present since
i'm busy in the new work, and the company is far away from my home, i
have no time to get on h2g2 besides weekend.
you said my english is so very different, do you mean my english is
chinese english? haw-haw, in china, we often jokingly say "your
english is chinese english" when a person spoke in broken English.
my english still want to be improved, as i usualy need a dictionary in writing english, for some words i don't know and some sentences i
can't express, i will look up on the dictionary or use the ranslation
software. i hope someday i can write and speak a fluent english and
needn't use any assistant tools^_^
take care

Nikita, thank you for putting me on your Friends list
Weekends are fine as I am busy in the week too.
I meant that your English is very good. Also that the two languages are very different. The written Chinese and English is also very different.
Watching programmes on TV I was very surprised at how many Chinese people speak English, and very well too. We are only just beginning to learn about present day China in any detail.
I have just watched a programme about wildlife in Yunnan which was beautiful. The scenery was stunning.
Our weekend is nearly over and I still have a lot to do but I will speak to you again soon.

hi websailor
English is a second language in china, besides chinese, english is a
required course. in past, english is a required course from junior
high school, i began to learned english in that time. afterward,
english is a required course from elementary school, even in some
infants' school, children are beginning to learn about english.
English is a general language in the world, we think it's very
important to learn English well. if you don't speak good English,
you'll be at a big disadvantage when you try to get a good job.
now i'm engaging in foreign trade in an international logistics
company, we engage in both export and import business, i'm in charge
of document part. but the company is small scale , if i want to work
at a better company, i must improve my english^_^
i ever have been to Yunnan. among Yunnan's famous tourist attractions
are Dianchi Lake the pearl on the highland, the Stone Forest the
number one wonder under heaven and Xishuangbanna tropical rainforest.
Dali is well known for its snowcapped Cangshan Mountain, the crystal-
clear Erhai Lake, the wind at Xiaguan, flower at Shangguan, snow at
the Cangshan Mountain and the moon mirrored in the Erhai Lake. The
Yulong Snow Mountains in Lijiang is a skiing resort at the lowest
latitude in the northern hemisphere. The Shangri-La scenery in
northwest Yunnan is picturesque. it's beautiful place.
in a word, China is a beautiful county with big cites, picturesque
ancient towns, lots of historic and scenic and lovely forests and
mountains. China is attractive to tourists for its beautiful scenery
and historic sites. i'm a travel lover, it's my dream to travel
through all the country. and travelling around the world is also my
dream, but i think it's impossible to come true.

Jim, I suspect she might get as good a treatment as anywhere else, as she is in a busy town, not out in the sticks.
Please let us know if you hear anything else.
