Robyn MacLarty, 21 year old South African Journalism graduate – that’s me. Since graduating at the end of 2001 I’ve been struggling to find out what I really want to do with my life. I want, no, need to find my dharma, or something like it.
I spent the first six months after graduating doing absolutely blotto (which is highly overrated). Then I decided that teaching English in Taiwan for a year seemed like a really good idea.
I was mistaken – I lasted two weeks.
However, I try to look on the bright side when I remember to and have a new found appreciation for South Africa since my sojourn to Taiwan. Never could I have conceived of a more smelly, polluted, abrasive, crowded or foreign place than Dounan (the little eastern town I stayed in). However, that said, I do think that I was probably wholly unprepared for and unrealistic about the whole experience. My expectations were probably similarly delusional to those that most people have when approaching marriage, or fame.
I arrived back in Johannesburg, home sweet home, with my tail tucked firmly between my legs (much in the manner of a Taiwanese cat. Har, har) and resolved on the spot to find a career. I set about distributing my feelers into the fields relative to my degree, and came across the field of sub-editing. I then applied my focus to this, as it turns out, enjoyable skill, and have since discovered that I have quite an affinity for it. (Am I babbling?) I'm not sure what else to write here. Um...
I am now trying to find what my parents like to call 'career prospects'. It's not going very well I'm afraid. But not badly either. Just not great. And not terrible. Aaaaaargh!!!
