How about this, then, Jabs? Country and Western, out-of date family values AND harmonies.
Here come the Judds!

Don't forget the mournful, absolutely tedious song built on four main repeating repeating repeating chords!
Yawn

I have Dylan Thomas to thank for this one. Here's part of Under Milk Wood:
MRS ORGAN MORGAN
Sometimes I like Fred best and sometimes I
like Arthur. Who do you like best, Organ?
ORGAN MORGAN
Oh, Bach without any doubt. Bach every time for me.
MRS ORGAN MORGAN
Organ Morgan, you haven't been listening to a word 1 said.
It's organ organ all the time with you..
FIRST VOICE
And she bursts into tears, and, in the middle of her salty
howling, nimbly spears a small flatfish and pelicans it
whole.
ORGAN MORGAN
And then Palestrina,
SECOND VOICE
says Organ Morgan.
Inspired by that, I went on a Palestrina hunt, and this is what I found.

All I can say is that chap Morgan knew what he was talking about!

I used to have "Palestrina - Live at the Apollo!" Infie, but they changed it when CDs came in.
Loved the Organ Morgan bit! But some impatient types might not agree:

Thanks for the Dylan Thomas, infie. I drive my family nuts by frequently quoting bits of it.

I raise you a Lady Lazarus, read by the poet herself:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=esBLxyTFDxE - the sound is poor so turn volume up.
[If anyone listening to it doesn't know it, it might help to know it's about her suicide attempts, before the final one.]

I can't follow that, Jabs.
At least, not with a poem.
How about some Jacques Brel? The Alex Harvey Band, with one of his darkest ...

I used to have this one, el D
http://www.amazon.com/Dylan-Thomas-Narrating-Under-Original/dp/B000M8HRY2/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&s
It was staged when Dylan Thomas was in New York, and recorded more or less by accident. Thomas himself played the First Voice.
Unfortunately (a) it was nicked and (b) I can't even play vinyl these days.

Ah, the days of vinyl! I still have a fairly decent 'vinyl-graph' but I must confess I haven't used it for a long time. I feel a nostalgia-fest coming on!
