Quitting is SO hard. I started smoking when I was a young'un, asthma notwithstanding, and I quit three separate times before it stuck. Being overwhelmed with the urge is NOT a failure; just any time you do light up, whether bumming a smoke or lighting up dog-ends from the ashtray (I've been there- hell, the second time I quit, I was picking up used dog-ends from the sidewalk smiley - yuk), tell yourself you'll try again, and you'll hold out longer next time.

Eventually, you will.

Eventually, you may go cold turkey (that's what I did the last time I quit, and it worked, more or less if you don't count occasionally cheating months afterward). It's been nearly two years without one.

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

AGM,

Hope you don't mind the abbreviation.
I am not going to impose any requirement on you.

It is unfair.

As a reformed smoker, twice... I know the difficulty.

I found the easiest way was to give up when I felt most relaxed. Dispose of all smoking parephanalia, stock up on Sunflower seeds and enjoy!

Bottom line:

1) Do not eat gum... Leads to ulcers.
2) Do not eat anything containing sugar! Adds to waist!
3) Do not carry papers, lighters or paraphenalia for smoking.

Do:
1) Enjoy the walk to get the daily paper and not have to fork out £5.00 for a packet of fags.
2) Do enjoy the smiley - coffee / smiley - tea and croissant while you read the paper, paid for by the lack of smoking.
3) Do enjoy not being frozen and a social leper by being indoors.
4) Do understand that, as a reformed smoker of 30 years, of both tailor-made and roll-your-own cigarettes, pipe tobacco and cigars, I feel for you and do not condemn you.

I just wish you the best of smiley - goodluck

I feel that I should come and with a smile on my face answer MMF's post in a nice sort of waysmiley - ok I have been smoking for 45 years I did try to give it up once on my fortyith birthday which lasted three days but was in such a bad mood that my then wife told me to go and buy some.
Fags here are not five pound a pack but eighty Pence, If I go out and buy a newspaper it will cost me 120 yen per copy, delivery costs 2650 yen per month that makes a minimum of 890 yen per month saving plus flip flop rubber, I do go out for walks ( it's a lovely day out there today) usually with a plastic bag in hand to get food for our rabbit, I did give up going to the pub in 2002 when the law started getting heavy on drink driving, saying that I am going out for a drink this saturday as it's one of my friends birthday, last year I went to pub three times only and when I do go out I go on the train and my wife picks me up in the car when I call her to bring me home,I am sure when I go out on saturday I will cadge a fag or two n come my birthday I will get a few rollups given to me I usually do smiley - whistle.
The thing is I should give it up for my health simple .

Hiya Anold; me in much the same situation! I moved from France to Ireland, cigs are three times the price, booze 4X the price, but being in love with a guy who doesn't smoke & drinks only moderately has helped me cut down from 40 cigs aday to around 3 to 4; cold damp weather & "no cigs in Public Places" also helps...but you may find you get a backlash effect at the start, my asthma actually got worse; chucking the muck out i suppose.

As for the booze; the major deterrent is cost: in France it was 1 Euro a litre for cheap but drinkable, here it's around 5 Euro for cheap & horrible! My Doc here is fully aware of my addictions & reckons giving up smoking then cutting back on boozing is best strategy, meanwhile try to reduce both, but not cold turkey since at our age it's too much of a shock to the system.

I've found previously having a loving partner who is similarly addicted to whatever & prepared to give up also is the best way. Agree when The Craving hits either of you, you have naughties instead!!!!!

Hi Terri I'm glad you have a happier life over in the wet country ,I'm a bit envious of your new stove , I've cut down on the drink by about half and cut down on the tobacco but not quit yet, now on Drum rollups ,I will stop but still got some good stash smiley - winkeye to blow before I quit, saw the doc just now , my blood pressure is very good but for the first time in my life I'm overweight and need to lose a bit of it, do nothing fast even just walking exercise not running, at least I'm still alive and kickingsmiley - ok now to work on my diet smiley - wah
