Returning to the teachers thing (I don't even live in the northern hemisphere, what I know of your accents comes from TV and my family) at my primary school we called our teachers by their first names. Confuses the hell out of people at my school when I say things like "Frank, he was the vice-principal" and they all go "WHAT?!? Oh, right, first names..."
It's weird down here, I go to a private school but all the kids who move from the public schools call the teachers 'Ms' and 'Sir' in normal conversation, whereas we'll just say 'Mr ____' / Miss/Ms/Mrs ______ or just start talking to them.
It's like the public school students are more polite than the private ones...

we took a wronge turning and got lost...thay is why
Glasgow scares me...I just don't know the roads...and then
you ask for directions and you're even more confused
because you don't understand the local lingo..even though
the person giving the directions was very nice.

"It is just left of that dense fogcloud, right underneat the big raincloud.
It is on the crossing of the Clyde and the M8. You can not miss it, there will be traffic jams on all the exit roads."

Traveller in Time under an Edinburgh sheepskin
"The quality of the roads I do not remember, are they paved with large boulders ?
The traffic is weird in Edinburgh, running bagpipe players, marching ever faster down the streets. And they did not even have headlights "
