Call to arms
Mina Posted Oct 4, 2007
I've got one in PR at the moment, one I need to make just one more visit to the building to finish, and I've started an update on another. I can't do much more for a couple of weeks, I've got my uni end of course assessment to get in and that has to be more important. Sorry!
Not that it's stopping me procrastinating on h2g2 of course.

I did start writing one, but am having a crisis when reading how well others write and comparing what I manage.
It's dull and clumsy, and I think I really shouldn't even try.

B'el, don't compare yourself to others - or if you do, compare your stuff to the way they wrote when they were starting out! Some of my early stuff is appalling, and I know others have improved over the years.
Of course, some people have been good all the time, but they are in the minority!

Or, ask yourself how many of us could write an Entry in a language not our first, I couldn't, I struggle enough with bits of Latin!

Thanks Eco, but I know I'll never manage this light-hearted, narrating style - all I manage to do is presenting facts. It's not good enough for me.

Thanks, GB. I think the language is only part of the problem - some *have* it, and others don't.

You must be able to do better than, or at least as well as, that!

It does seem to contain all info you'd need, although it could be a good idea to check if things have changed since then.

It's an appalling entry! It badly needs updating, but I haven't been to Paris since, so can't do it. All my entries in that project I try to forget.

But that was years ago when it was all still new to everybody.
And I wouldn't say my entries are really bad, but they nearly all lack this certain 'je ne sais quoi' others don't seem to have any problems with.

Well, if I can't convince you, then I can't, but the site was over two years old by then, and a lot of people were doing much better.
All I can say is, that if you think you need to improve, how will you, if you don't try?

It's past 'Call to arms' stage - it's more Levée en masse that's needed now!
I've got a nice idea for one which will be in PR in a week or less, about a weird kind of organism.

Ok, Bomba, I totally misread that last word.
Bel, I've never thought any of your entries to be remotely dull. I know what you mean about entries lacking a little something though, I've felt it several times with my own. I think it depends partly on what you're writing. Sometimes there are funny stories you can relate, for instance, but without that kind of thing it's a lot more difficult.

Thanks, Elentari. I guess it's really just my current frame of mind that makes me think so low of what I've written. I do hope it will pass soon.

Why not? Gnomon's "Animal Sex" got through, and Matt's "Morning Glory". Mina's "Sex" entry is still live, I link to that lots of times when I'm editing and writing (for the dancing dolphins, of course)
