Oh, a rather quiet, controlled, subdued(but unmistakably joyous)joysmiley - smiley. No real shortage of food here either, in fact I'm looking forward to some authentic Mexican food tomorrow. The family that operates the particular restaurant has only been in the country for a year or so(& according to my brother, still only have temporary visas).

Mine had quiet moments (I lock myself away in the kitchen when I need one of those smiley - winkeye)

Had plenty of smiley - chocsmiley - gifts, mostly shared ones though - Ferrero Rocher, Bendicks mint selection, Irish cream liqueurs smiley - drool
Also was given the Rolled Gold + CD smiley - ok

Our closest Chinese takeaway was really good until the staff were taken away in a smiley - bluelight van! The replacement people are nowhere near as good smiley - erm

I stayed with my parents Christmas Eve, so after the rest of the family had left(& Mum'n'Dad got things cleaned up-then off to bed about 9:30), I was here at hootoo until after 11.smiley - winkeyeYes thank goodness they have a computer! And of course the 25th was very quiet. Moreso after I returned to my flat that evening, which was ok - smiley - choc& reading...& more smiley - choc(including some Cognac truffles).smiley - ok

The Mexican food was great & the owners(husband'n'wife, I believe)are very warm & friendly. My brother has been there often so they treat him like an old friend. We were there shortly after they opened for the day, but they certainly attracted a good lunch crowd.

*stretches again after omilette, toast & smiley - coffee*It still feels quite a bit like '07, nothing new'n'stimulating/electrifying in the air. smiley - laughMuch like most New Years Days, so that's good.

smiley - laugh I always find it odd New Years day - Christmas decorations still up but starting to look a bit jaded, heaps of smiley - choc and other food still around, but usually quite a quiet, nothing-exciting/ waiting-for-something-to-happen kind of day smiley - weird

That is true, very true! And that smiley - xmastree in the corner or alcove that seems to say 'Excuse me, would you mind giving me a hand? I'm afraid I must be going now.' smiley - laugh

smiley - laugh Ah yes smiley - cats and smiley - xmastrees! Years ago we had a smiley - cat that would streak madly from the kitchen, through the front hall and across the living room(essentially a U-shaped route). Then without pausing he'd leap onto the lowest branch, continue his mad dash to the top of the tree, spin about & right back down! It always seemed that just as he reached the floor again the smiley - xmastree would start to lean & inevitably come crashing down. smiley - roflThe cat of course thought this was great sport! smiley - rofl

smiley - biggrinHello! Oh yes very snowy as well as very cold(-14 C)smiley - brr We just had a fairly substantial fresh snowfall the other day. So here it is the second half of Jan. and it finally looks like winter. Rather glorious with all the clean white snow on trees and buildings. We have an annual ice-carving festival that started Thurs.- the new site lacks the selection of photos that were previously available. http://www.iceonwhyte.ca (and of course click on 'photo gallery') Ahsmiley - eurekabut... http://www.mynameispaula.com/iceonwhyte.html Hmm, a sameness to some of those it seems...but you get the idea.

Just had a very nice box of Green & Black's white/milk/dark smiley - choc mint leaves. smiley - ok

smiley - wow Those are amazing! smiley - smiley King Kong looks great and the ice castle from last year is very smiley - cool

Pretty mild here, above 10 C some days! It had been wet and really windy smiley - yikes Substantial damage to a school roof near here but then I do live on the coast smiley - biggrin

smiley - smileyGlad you liked those! The ice castle is up again this year. The event was until a few years ago, along Whyte avenue(just outside shops and such). Then it was moved to what's often referred to as 'Gazebo Park' & a couple years ago it was relocated again, to a larger park. So I'm sure they have the big ice slide, which I imagine was fairly popular.

In some of those photos the ice castle looks rather like the Great Wall of China smiley - biggrin

I saw pictures of an Ice Festival in Belgium before Christmas. I'd love to go to one. smiley - magic We don't even get enough for smiley - snowball or a smiley - snowman some years.

smiley - yikesHas it been 3 weeks? Obviously it has. Hope you've been well since we last 'spoke'. We've had another one of our winteer festivals, this one based on Norwegian historic legend - http://www.canadianbirkie.com (click on 'The Birkie' to read the history & see photos). And Sat. there's another activity getting underway: http://www.silverskate festival.org ...not that I've ever taken part in either of them.

We've certainly had plenty of snow this year! More specifically, other regions of the country have. I believe you can watch a short weather-related news story at http://www.canada.com/global/national/index.html (It was the first item/story on Tues's newscastsmiley - brr) Although it appears they're working on the site now'n'then(in fact as I type this), so you may need to try at different times of the day.

Yes, it has been 3 weeks. smiley - biggrin Been visiting a bit more sporadically lately.

Those festivals look pretty smiley - cool too smiley - smiley
I have relatives in Saskatchewan, they've been missing the heavy snowing in the past few years I think. Brown winters not being good for farming etc. smiley - erm

Hasn't snowed where I am in Southern England but still really smiley - brr today! For here that is smiley - winkeye That will frighten all the spring bulbs which have been coming into flower early this year smiley - laugh

My excuse was that I had a fairly minor problem with the computer. But I needed some time to myself, so I took a bit more than planned.smiley - smileySo now I'm back, only somewhat rejuvenated but quite recharged!

Oh I think the whole country here(as well as parts of the northern U.S.)is getting more snow this year. And yes having a couple relatives that still farm I know they rely on the melt-water(from snow)to provide moisture for spring seeding.

A couple years ago we had such a mild fall that a few trees were actually starting to bud in Nov., thinking it must be spring!
