I'm not going into business. Don't like it (though I've not had much experience).

Nah there was a not in there I'm fairly sure.... yeah there was. I d'no, The degree I'm doing will make me chronically unemployable anyway. I'll work at McDonalds, and when they place their order (in French, if needs be) I'll be able to ask "Do you want philosophy with that"?

Well, that was sort of my point in asking why you had to wear things. So why do you? Because it's part of a uniform? So why the uniform? Is somebody afraid they won't recognize you on the ship or what? Maybe you could review the reasons if there are any.

Researcher 185550 Posted Sep 21, 2003
I gotta wear a uniform because of school. I think the rationale is the same as for drill. It's a way of getting you into a mode of thinking. PO says you do this, you do it. The dressing is the same. You've got to wear this in this way, doesn't matter it makes you look like a pr@t, because PO says.
School is slightly different. We wear uniforms because it's a public (to an American, private) school.

RAF Wing... Lookee I'm Invisible!! Posted Sep 21, 2003
Weird, so why is the public private? And what's the public called then?

RAF Wing... Lookee I'm Invisible!! Posted Sep 21, 2003
I presume the mode of thinking you're referring to is to not think, just follow orders?

The public school is a state in britain (interpret that as you will!)
I quite like a tie, but not if it is worn to be impressive, as these only make you look a kn*b! They can add a splash of colour to an outfit, but there is a fine line to tread, a tie must be chosen carefully.
The National Mall
RAF Wing... Lookee I'm Invisible!! Posted Sep 21, 2003
Where there you go then. You like ties but you don't like drab ones or whatever. Guess you'd rather follow your own orders right?
That still begs of the question about the whole thought process that created ties and the uniforms they're supposed to be apart of okay?

Ties in uniforms suck. Plain and simple. But choosing to wear a tie is diffrent, not constricting but allowing individuality. It should be noted that my work uniform is an open necked shirt.
As for following my own orders, I don't, not since I married anyway.
Ties are eurocentric, and I think that forcing anyone who is not culturally disposed to wear one is wrong, unless like me they choose to. But think of all those suits up in the city or wall street who's only form of individuality or self expression is the tie!

An American private school is a British public school because theoretically anyone could go to them provided they have the brains and the cash (though there are subsidies, scholarships etc to help with that part). A state school is run by the state and therefore free. A private school is a tutor who comes to your house, or home- schooled. Because no- one can apply to join.
I think the rationale is, so you look smart. I'm playing devil's advocate here, I don't agree with it.

Well Im glad that is sorted out then, cheers RK Now why is it that some uniforms insist on ties to be worn
I see the police and prison warders have the same "clip on" ones we used to have to wear in the ambulance service, yet now I see that even some police forces have done away with them! Great!!
Like I said earlier in this thread, I hate wearing a tie
Now then, Why do women carry "Handbags??"

It's only a theory, by no means bulletproof.

Well, Smudger, they probably don't like how the strapped ones look over strapless gowns but I could be wrong about that.
Women don't usually get a lot of pockets sewn into their clothes and their jeans get pretty tight for some reason making those pockets kind of useless so some kind of a bag is going to probably be a good thing for carrying stuff around as it has been for thousands of years probably.
But if you really want to find something stupid that a lot of women wear you can start with pantyhose maybe. And if women were still wearing corsettes for anything other than fetish dates, that would qualify too.
The subject of western european derived attire could keep us discoursing endlessly actually because most of it is pretty stupid or useless not to mention poorly sewn. But the fabrics are kind of cool, which I believe has been a european plus for centuries, nice fabrics although not nearly as nice as Peruvian or Bolivian fabrics not to mention some Southwestern cotton or wool fabrics.
Synthetics are interesting but usually pretty yikky especially when you sweat in them and they get really hot in the sun so they can even burn you a little depending on how dark the color is. And they're cold in the winter too. All except for polypropylene which is supposed to keep you warm and dry which it might do if you keep a bunch of layers over it.
But mostly these things are intended I think to mimic different more expensive natural fabrics like silk, which they sort of do as you might expect synthetics might sort of do anything.
Now when I look at what might be the evolution of the tie, it appears to be some sort of way of keeping the bugs from migrating from your crotch to your head or vice versa. And also to provide a readily available hanky for sneasing your snuff into.
I suppose it also might have provided some degree of enhanced heat retention as mufflers do and also might have kept your body odor from migrating to your nose. It could also hold a lot of rose water to provide the same kind of protection or masking if you prefer.
What it seems to provide now is a way of distinguishing between formal, informal, business and casual attire for men since the tie often defines those distinctions by its style and presence or absence.
I don't see a lot of purposes for it otherwise. I mean for anyone with any pretense of actually working for a living, it probably just gets in the way or poses a strangulation hazard. So go figure.
