Wolfgang and Houndstooth Posted Aug 13, 2004
You aren't the first person who refused to face the truth, and I daresay you won't be the last.
Time for me to go start the special of the day. Folks will be heading in after work with a hankering for barbecue.

I'm not a creature of sheep legs and human head. I'm sure of it.
H, you oughta teach Wolfgang a thing about barbecue.

*wipes tear of relief from her eye*
Well, I should hope not. Honestly, you cn't believe a word Wolfgang says....let alone Houndstooth.
Do you believe this weather? This is the coolest August so far for decades.

J Posted Aug 14, 2004
It's cool here too.
I don't like the sweltering Augusts. This is nice.
Wolfgang is a dirty liar. Only one of my legs is ovine.

He's seldom sober enough to know what he's seeing.
It's supposed to be back up into the 90s today. And the sun is shining.

Have you been watching the Olympics?
I have been during the day a bit, but I ruin the rerun primetime thing by looking at the standings on the internet
The US ain't doin' too bad. Not too bad at all.
Amazing how we're able to beat all of these islands in swimming events.

Hypatia Posted Aug 17, 2004
In team events the larger countries should have an advantage. But in the individual events it should be possible for athletes from the small nations to do well. Since they don't........well, there's something wrong somewhere. Of course, only part of the equation is actual talent. Look how the Soviet Union used to wipe the floor with everyone - including us. It was because they trained for the Olympics full time. So much for amateur athletics.

I'd be complaining like that if the US didn't have six gold, silver and bronze medals.
I'm rooting for the US, Canada, Britain and Greece. Britain because of h2g2, Canada because I don't see any risk in rooting for them, and Greece because it's in Greece and I think it's courteous to thank them in this way.
I wonder if there are any Canadians lurking?
Jodan Who? Blacksheep When? Pip Where? Fiona What?
Hypatia Posted Aug 17, 2004
Probably not. I think we have bored all potential lurkers to death already.
I will not root for France or Germany. But then, I'm not really in the mood for the Olympics this year for some reason. I usually enjoy watching. Especially the swimming and the gymnastics. I like the track and field events, too.

J Posted Aug 17, 2004
Hey, me too. Swimming, track and field and gymnastics, in that order. But actually, field before track, but you don't say field and track, eh?
France ain't doing bad. I don't think Germany is doing very well. Why don't you like them for the Olympics?
Jodan Who? Blacksheep When? Pip Where? Fiona What?
Hypatia Posted Aug 17, 2004
General principles. I don't like France for anything, to be honest. I don't know why. Makes me believe in reincarnation. I have disliked France since I was a kid - for no good reason. Well, you have to like French food. How can you not like French food? And I greatly admire French cathedrals. It's their attitude that frosts me. It's the same with the Germans. They think they're just a little smarter than the rest of us. It serves them right to lose. Both of them. They can't stand it that they're third rate powers.

Not all French are bad of course. If you look around, there are plenty of decent and good French researchers around here (of course I'm basing this on their ability to speak French, which could also make them Canadians)
France used to be such a nice country too. In between the French and Indian war and World War II, they were a very nice country. But now I could never go to Paris.
Well, the Germans aren't too bad ever since World War II ended. Not that I know much about Germany nowadays.

I hope we don't have any French lurkers. I don't know why I feel like that. It is irrational. I know that. Of course considering all the venom against Americans that we have to put up with on this site, I guess I'm entitled to rant about some other country on occassion.
I actually have some German blood. But I find them a little scary.

No snotty posts here from any insulted lurkers, so I guess I got away with it.
Guess what I got today at work? They installed my 22 foot north window. 'Tis a great window. And the stonemason finally sobered up enough to report to work.

Sounds like a good day. Your internet is back, your library is coming along... no snot.
And in addition, the US is kicking some Olympic butt

Hey, Kerry is ahead by almost 10 points in Ohio. It's a dead heat in Misery.

That's a lot of USAs.
I haven't been keeping up on the polls.
10 points? That's pretty impressive. But Missouri is still without conclusive polls?
Jodan Who? Blacksheep When? Pip Where? Fiona What?
Hypatia Posted Aug 19, 2004
48% to 48%. I think the latest Ohio poll was 52% for Kerry to 42% for Bush.
I think if I was the RNC I'd be starting to worry.

...and they just go out back and shoot the other four percent?
I never could get used to those percentages not adding up to one hundred.

Hypatia Posted Aug 19, 2004
They don't include third party candidates or undecideds. So, they're never going to add upto 100%
Another brutal day on tap. But right now I'm on my way to the library to look through my new window and see what it looks like in the morning light. I really love my new window.
