Hi. Pinniped here.
Good to make your acquaintance.
Being clever and interesting in a foreign language is impressive. Respect.
I wish I could say I get on with the French. Truth is, the group I work for is multinational, and I get to deal a lot with the French offices ...
...One in Paris
...One near Lyon - but definitely better than Paris.
They say to me : "You have no respect for French engineering..."
So I point out that my car is a Citroen, and add that :
"It's YOUR f***ing engineering that I don't like"
Keep it up and enjoy.

(I'll let you know if I see any UFO. Pretty quiet that way round here, I have to admit)

hi pinniped...
mmmmm... tho' i'm against generalising when it comes to people i must admit that dealing with some parisiens can be very off-putting...
but my prejudices concerning paris has also to do with my step-father who was a "typical" parisien with all the trimmings eg: for him paris was france and anywhere else didn't exist [apart for his holidays of course]...
the irony being that he was not even born in paris...
"thanks" to him i'm now lumbered with latent prejudices against parisiens and dentists [he was a dentist..]...
at least he was not speaking like maurice chevalier so i count my blessings...
talk later...

Hi Loup
Just in case you didn't get it back there in that other thread, I certainly wasn't talking about you.
You ARE , in the appropriate French manner, right down to using the computing equivalent of a 2CV
'Fact I didn't actually know you'd posted as I wrote that.
As you can tell if you re-read the above, I'm certainly with you on Parisians. Except you apparently know some good ones. Now that IS news.
I feel exactly the same way about Londoners, BTW. Maybe we ought to move all Londoners and Parisians to one of the Channel Islands and maroon them there? Sark would be big enough, I reckon.
I hope you don't me sometimes calling you Silverwolf either. It's a good name. Do you know, I think it sounds even better in English like that. It most definitely is not a concession to the Moderators, as one Researcher assumed.
There are some really strange people round here, aren't there?
I wouldn't worry about Alec asterisking out bits of France. There like that, these Strines. Uncivilised. Yeah, come to think of it, that's what we need. A "Bash the Australians" thread. And then after that we'll start a "Bash the Scots" thread.
France can make a good start on that project this afternoon, of course.
See you around, and, as ever, Respect.

hi pinniped...
"silverwolf" is fine: it's the other name for that character from that novel that might never be finished [the constant delays in acquering a PC seem to hint that this story is doomed from the start...]...
alec caught me at a bad time... for some unknown reasons the starring out of the words became the focus for me... and of course his little game in his reply [typing frnch instead] didn't help...
but if he wants to talk with me about other things i won't mind...
oh dear... is he australian?!... i definitely didn't do my homework there...
i usually check who i'm talking to before arguing err i mean debating...
oh well something else i might apologise about...
my computing equivalent to a 2CV usually let me down badly when entering a discussion... especially if it involves a long reply... yesterday was even worse as whisky had just explained that alec was usually alright and my posting was coming out like i was going to go for him anyway...
like in Real Life we are surrounded with a lot of people with different experiences in life... katrine is a great friend of mine as well as an ex-LDer... she might have perceived the situation as similar to the ones we had in the LD [LeisureDistrict] library... some were _very_ ugly... and because we type what we say [people not being able to see our facial expression and hear the intonation in our voice], that can easily lead to misinterpretation...
will have to blame alec for that situation methinks....
talk soon...
i still have a lot of catching up to do due to the difficulties to access h2g2 for us digibox users...
the LDers community on h2g2 is developing nicely but i'm kinda paying the price [in a good way] at the mo'... lot of things to do..
i still have to bring more "gems" to the entry... i will have to plan a delivery one of these days...

hey!!!
not fair... i used to have a 2CV too...with the flap-up bottom-half windows and the indicators that sound like a clicker-toy.
WHATACAR!!!!!
...and then there was the R4...(the gear-lever fell off, but worked just as well with a big tourne-vis in its place, it could certainly get through swollen rivers.
just thought i'd pop over and say 'salut grenouille!'

...that thing was triffic, it could get through country lanes and tracks that would seriously challenge any 4x4.
However, the windows would always flap open at the worst possible moment.

I always thought they looked silly, BUT, I have also had a lot of respect for them, they look nice and simple, and practicle and as for seriously challenging a 4X4, yes, I can beleve that,
I think I heard somewere that is almost imposible to turn one over on a corner
