Odd... when my sister got home from work today she had a Spanish/English dictionary just because it was cheap. smiley - erm Maybe I should give it to Cal... although then I'd have to explain why my sister's Spanish/English dictionary is gone. Hmmm...

Los fijoles de los reyes!

(Which means: The beans of kings!
It's the only thing I know how to say... *blush*)

I was going to ask if the breakfast thing was churros.

Then again, I'm guessing the name doesn't matter if it has enough sugar.

I take it you had a good time in Spain.

I did. Though mostly it was disembarking from a ship when I was there... the only time I've spent any good amount of time in that area is in Mallorca - the ship stayed extra time due to high seas. I've always wanted to go back to Spain and spend real time there. I may have to for the churros with chocolate sauce you linked to.

Thanks for the info - you learn something new every day... smiley - smiley

I was reading that recipe and thinking "I could make that.".

I started saving for a big trip a couple of years ago. Still haven't taken the trip, things keep getting in the way.

I know how that happens.. In my previous industry I traveled so much because that was what it was all about. Now I travel so little it's depressing.

Admittedly if I go back to Spain I'd like to go with a local or semi-local because then you really get to see things, not just the tourist stuff. When I was in Barcelona one of the neat things was our driver took us to Sagrada Familia but because it was actually his parish church he showed us a small chapel there where he had been married and his children baptized. It was wonderful!

When I went to Italy it was also such a case but even better. I had a friend that lives in Cosenza. He was going to meet us in Florence (a few friends and I were going to go for about a week) and my friends had things come up one by one. My friend suggested I blow off Florence but use the money to fly to Lamezzia, the nearest airport to him. He put me up in a spare bedroom in his and his brother's apartment and took me all over. It was WONDERFUL!!!! He took me up to a small village that is not even on maps, where his family had their villa. We drove into the mountains to a wonderful lake. We stayed in a friend's villa on the beach in Diamante. Oh how fun!!!

My last night there I thanked the man who had leant me his villa by making a huge paella and lots of sangria using the wine he had brought down from his mountain house. There were 20-25 people at some point, and I knew only two. My friend and the man who had loaned the villa. And spoke not a word of Italian.

Oh what fun it is when you get to REALLY experience a place instead of just take pictures of touristy stuff. smiley - biggrin

You do have a point about finding a local to see the real places.

That sounds like a wonderful trip to Italy.

Oh it was. Even when I would travel on a cruise or something I seldom took part in the organized shore excursions unless I was escorting on them.

I would usually wander around on my own. All of the most fun times I've had traveling I either had someone who was local or semi-local with me or someone like me who has more guts than brains and is content to talk to anyone and everyone in a small cafe and find some new and exciting things.

I do know that I'd also like to go back to Mallorca. There were several flats to rent in the main square. It would be fun to rent a flat for a few weeks and just sort of putter around aimlessly learning all of the nifty details.

I'm from the very deep south, talking to strangers is not a problem.

The trip I keep planning is to the U.K. You think I'll be able to find someone to show me around a bit?
