The search engine Altavista has a translation service which used to be called BabelFish. There was a link at the bottom of that page "Find out the history of the term BabelFish". I followed it and ended up here.
That was three and a half years ago and I still haven't find the way out.

I did a google search on the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy and stumbled across this. isn't it funny how so many of the universes greatest discoveries were found by accident?

As for computers try a English gentleman Inventer by the name of Babbage, also for future referance reading try to look up WW2, Station X, and the activies of one Allan Turin, just might be worth a look!
And also IMHO that the Atomic age was brought about by the fact the atom was split by the British Olympic Atom Splitting Team, in a Oxford Lab in the 1930's, buy a very scared Lab assistant in a brown coat with a very sharp axe, can't you just hear it..... Ok Jenkins, get on with it! Just one good tap and that should do it....
American's allways make me smile, allways!

Yeah, like legalising guns actually makes the place safe. Has anyone seen Bowling for Columbine? I haven't, but I've seen the little cartoon about gun-laws.

If you're going to bring Alan Turin into it and split hairs, the Enigma machine could be an early computer, the Germans invented it, the Pole's copied it and if you believe Hollywood the Yanks captured the code book, which, BTW was captured by HMS Bulldog 9 months before America joined the war

Agreed, you could argue that the engmia machine is a type of computer, but it does not store data, or is able to retrive data, but the stuff that A. Turin was thinking about in the thirties is very silmier to the stuff we have to day and i'm using to write/read this, also Charles Babbage (1791-1871) who's Difference Engine No1 might be one of the first purpose bulit calculaters but, ideas may be considered by some to have layed the foundation of to days computers!
pheww! thats some responce and i'm sure someone outthere will have a few ideas on it! TEA'n'TOAST anyone?
Also IMOH I like to think that this type of thread, shows the best of h2 and thats why I remain, and why not join B.O.A.S.T.
