Two policemen's kids? Looks like Father's Day is coming early to this thread. Well, my dad wore a uniform for a while...
********
My dad was once a fireman, who drove a big red engine.
But now he's old and ornery; at his attitude I'm cringin'.
He will not eat his vegetables, and on cookies he's now bingin',
and I have to make him change his socks, or their smell will start infringin'.
In the middle of the kitchen, he moves most like a glacier,
and blocks me during cooking from the sink and 'frigerator.
He drops his food upon the floor and makes the kitty barf.
Some days I'd like to tie him up inside a large wool scarf.
Sometimes I am reminded he was born so long ago,
That women couldn't vote, or even drive to picture shows.
But I haven't forgotten the kites we made with fringe and pretty paper,
or the igloo in the back yard, or the great nail driving caper*.
So even if he bugs me lots, my ancient daddy dear,
I grateful still to have a dad who likes to have me near.
(*The Nail Driving Caper: When I was about three or four he perched me on the roof of a shack he was building and gave me some nails and a hammer so I could learn to drive them. I think I mostly hammered his fingers. Mom decided not to look.)

You are welcome flyingfireballxl5, all poems are fine, we don't usually run to topics so feel free to post when you like and what you like.
Great poem hstwrd, your Dad sounds like a great charactrer - I don't know how we got on to the topic of Dads ... but it has proven interesting.

As we are still on the subject of Dad's, and I'm in melancholy mood, here's one about my step-dad
Surrounded by people
Yet always alone
An unwelcome stranger
In my family home
All else fades to blak
And the feeling of fear
Through the cracks in my mind
Time disappears
The nightmares still come
I'm still yours in the night
The difference these days is
You're gone with the light
Each day I get stronger
I'll continue to fight
Making your darkness brighter
Turning your wrong to right
For I'm no longer alone
Friends stand with me
And I know that one day
I am going to be free

Thanks, I was in kind of a dark mood when I wrote it

Dads in the happy hunting ground
Where peace,and joyful freedom abound
I often wish he were still around
But with a celestial horse and hound
Where harps and trumpets do resound
There with friends he's to be found
Dads in the happy hunting ground

Yeah .... the trouble is it's either going to be EVERYTHING or NOTHING.
I think I'd like to hang around a while longer before seeing which it is.

Sprites .... I love them, mainly because science haven't answered all the questions yet ..... despite what SEx would have you believe.
