There should be a statute of limitations on sickness and disease. No more than three days ... no, hours at most ... just to make us appreciate our health.

Augh! Enough already! smiley - yuk

Thanks guys...

This nonsense went on for several months last year after his operations - and he's not in as good shape health wise as he was before the first operation, so who knows how long this will go on? Just have to wait and see...

Right now (unless something has changed since they found out he has the staph infection), he only has the feeding tube, trach tube and a catheter.... oh, and probably an IV for whatever antibiotic they have him on for the infection.

When I'd left there the first time, they had 4 pumps on the IV pole, and at least 8 bags of meds going into a mainline IV..... So going down to those few tubes is a tremendous improvement....

Mom and Steve went to look at a nursing home in Seaford, Delaware yesterday (the only one they've found on the eastern shore that is able to handle a patient with a feeding tube and trach tube, since those require skilled nursing care), under the impression that since Dad is still in isolation and in intensive care, it would be some time before he would be released from the hospital, and when she got home from there, there was a call on the answering machine from Dad's caseworker at the hospital saying that they plan to release him this Friday, wanting to know which nursing home to send him to. I don't know what they could possibly be thinking, going directly from being isolated and in intensive care to a nursing home, but that was what she said. Mom hopes to talk to a Dr. today to find out what exactly is going on, because this is quite a shock, but you know how it is trying to catch up with a Dr. in a hospital setting. As recently as last week, the nuerosurgeon was telling us it would be quite some time before he could be released from the hosptial.

Anyhow, the caseworker says they never have any luck placing anyone in this particular nursing home because they never have any empty beds there, but as Mom was being shown through the place yesterday, it looked to her like there were several empty beds - not just with the residents out of the room - no signs that anyone was living there. So we shall see. It would be wonderful if he could be there, because it is only a 40 minute drive with considerably less traffic than going across the bridge, as compared to the 1-1/2 hours it takes to go to Baltimore.

They put the feeding tube in his abdomen yesterday in order to get it out of his nose where it was causing a sinus infection because it had been in there for far too long. Keeping him from pulling the feeding tube out of his stomach may be a very different matter, but they feel certain they can keep him from doing that. They had not tried to use the feeding tube as of last night when I talked to Mom, since they normally wait 24-48 hours after the surgery before trying to feed the patient.

Apparetly Dad is most likely to pull at the tubes when he's sleepy or possibly even in his sleep, because he was untied the other day when Mom and Steve were there for a while, and was able to relax with his hands propped behind his head for a change. But it wasn't long before the nurse came back and replaced his restraints again. He knew what would happen - and Dad was aware enough to agree with him.

There may not be any more updates on this until next week as we'll be taking Amy+ back to uni, and visiting Lord Scott's mom while we're in the area, although if I hear anything new from Mom, I will have limited internet access and can always do a quick update.

Scottlets? Oh my.....

The problem is actually finding the Dr to begin with.... they'd end up having to call his office, which would result in several days of phone tag. smiley - grr

Posting from Southwest Va!

Got a quick phone call from Mom this evening (on a terrible cell phone connection) saying that she managed to talk to the neurosurgeon today and he said he absolutely was not releasing Dad from the hospital until he can talk to him (meaning the trach tube would be out or at least replaced by one that can be covered so he can talk) and find out how Dad's thinking processes are.

Yes, that's much better!smiley - ok I still can't imagine what the case worker who called mom could possibly have been thinking, or where she could have gotten such faulty information, but no matter, it's sorted out now.
