I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam I am. Actually, I don't eat any eggs, nor ham. I prefer green natto and tofu. I should be a complete member of the H2G2 Vegetarian Society, except for a slight taste for sushi and good cheddar. Fortunately, I live in Japan, where I can fulfil my deepest vegan desires while occasionally chancing to cheat a little. Japanese cuisine lends itself to completely meat-free lifestyle, although you would be hard-pressed to find many Japanese people who would think so.
In my youth I was a Southerner, and South Africa is my ancestral home, but I've not been back for a while. I was brought up in the wild beauty of Africa, and as such I make environmental improvement my constant goal, in my private and public life.
I've lived in Japan for a few years now. After an extended European holiday (10 months and counting,) I'm heading back to complete my Masters and start some serious work. Like many people, I have a bittersweet relationship with my adopted country, but the good times are more frequent than the bad. I absolutely love Japanese food, especially miso soup yum yum. My first Guide entry was a somewhat simplified guide to everyday Japanese phrases, which should prove useful to anyone wanting to visit.
I've recently taken up serious cycling. After many years of relying on my bike purely for transport, I've taken on a more challenging approach. My virgin tour was a big one, 1100 kms across Europe taking in Austria, Germany and France. From Japan I'm planning a few extended trips within the country and through a few other Asian countries, and I'll hopefully provide some valuable info for the h2g2 Cycling Club and any others planning to cycle through Europe and Asia.
