Paul
Um, 56k, I think... Though it usually runs at around 45 on the desktop. I think the laptop has the same, but it usually runs at 42.5, even if I crawl under the desk and get the good cable instead of the extra phone cable.

OOooooo! Then maybe both of you could test pages for me. Let's see ... what would you like in payment ... large bills?

Actually, I didn't mind the dialup service I had recently. It was fine for the little bit of toodling I do on the Internet ... but it was tying up Mom's line and costing a fortune on her particular telephone plan. Had I chosen to stick with dialup, we would have had to pay more for our phone service in addition to the fees for a dialup service, which was only a few dollars less per month than going with the high speed cable service. The choice was a no brainer.

Oh yes she does. Toodling like poodling is old fashioned Britspeak, found amongst our silly posh classes. I'm very shocked and embarassed.

Much faster on the laptop, too--no way it's from a cache, since this is the first access from here
Big bills would be nice

I've just now finished filling out the class action lawsuit paperwork. It was only slightly less complex than a US Internal Revenue tax form. Soon, I will be required to turn in this laptop for testing....and I will be without a computer at home for an indeterminate time.
Lest you all think that I'm lazy ... I procrastinated deliberately in order to wait for the next big thing in computers. Actually, I want a Mac this time! It will be suitably loaded with Adobe Creative Suite programs for my creative pleasure.
At the moment, I'm torn between the iMac and the iBook.... yes, the iBook is a piddly little thing by comparison, but it would be utterly portable, huggable and squeezable. The Powerbook is out of the question since the cost is prohibitive and the chips ... they are a changin'.
Take that Toshiba! Although ... ... if I were in the market for a PC this time, Toshiba would still be my first choice. More bang for the buck.

More bang for the buck, AW?
I think I'd better warn Bambi (a buck if there ever was one ) to stay out of the woods until hunting season is over....

Good timing, AW! They almost always introduce new Mac at the Macworld Expos, and there's one in Boston July 11-14. You'll be able to get an "obsolete" model at a reduction fairly soon!

I'm drooling over the iMac (which is sort of messy) ... also been checking out some of the refurbished models on the Apple website. The prices are remarkable! Seems like a good idea until they tell you that they may or may not come with the original software CDs.
My biggest issue with the Macs is this: WHY THE HECK DON'T THEY PUT MORE RAM INSIDE THEM TO START WITH!!??? 256 MB is useless for the new Adobe Creative Suite. That particular feature seems really skimpy these days at Apple.
What's the Mac of your dreams, Shea?

At last, at long last, I have received a cardboard box in which to return my lagging, nearly four-year-old Toshiba computer. In exchange, I will be given a check in the amount of $1000.00 USD.
Hopefully. Provided the package doesn't explode in mid air over Kansas City on its way to California.
Moooowaaaaaa haaaa hhahahha ha. ha. *cough*
Well, I've done it. Bought a new Mac 14" iBook as a replacement. Yes, I've jumped the gun, but the idea of being without a computer for several weeks, perhaps months, while the people handling the paperw*rk get around to sending the check is simply unimaginable.
I could die.
And yes, as some of you may point out... "Why didn't you buy the far superior iMac for the same price? After all, AW, feature for feature the iMac is capable of p*ssing upon the iBook from a considerably high height." I'll tell you why. Because the iMac isn't a laptop, that's why! I have come to enjoy the notion of grabbing my computer and retreating into a darkened room at a moment's notice like a deranged gerbil. It's nice to be able to go off by oneself with one's computer cord dangling behind.
