If you are sad because of loneliness, then the responses here tell you to not be lonely because you have friends.
If you are sad because it is winter, then that can't be helped unless you move to Hawaii or to some place to that effect.
If you are sad because you feel something else is wrong with you, then don't drink wine, spirits, liquor, or beer because drinking alcohol will only make your mood worse. I haven't met anyone who drinks their sorrows away and are wholely successful.
...Like what homer says,
"Men [but anyone really] can just pour beer on it, and bury it deep down inside."
Your best bet --and avoid all drugs unless prescribed to your by a sane physician-- is to watch a movie like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or some happy little thing to uplift your spirit a bit.
I suggest The Princess Bride, Spaceballs, or some other movie like these.
I have been in sad, mad, and bad mood during this winter, which makes me "moody" and a disgruntled debater. What I do to alleviate my bothering mood is that I read, listen to music, dance (or exercise), or watch movies. Also, fortunately, my readings for school has me now reading a deliciously wicked book about murder that happened in Prussia of 1900 in a place called Konitz (pronounce Koonitz, which is today in Poland).
You will feel better.

Hi, Scan,
Me too. At the first sign of sunshine I am much better, but from January to March I am up and down like a yo-yo . Music<musicalnote<, walking and watching the birds feeding are the only things that lift me. Snow would brighten the place up, but if you have to travel I suppose that isn't much fun. People are nicer somehow when it snows
Most of us don't get enough fresh air and exercise these days, and working by electric light all the time is, I think, really bad for you.
Haven't tried a light box, but I am tempted. It seems to get worse as I get older
Still, snowdrops are coming out, daffodils are coming up and the birds are pairing up, so the garden, at least, will liven up soon. One thing I couldn't bear is not having a garden. Only two years of my life have been without a garden, and it felt like a prison.
to Must try to more often - maybe that will do the trick
cheer me up too. Makes my boring posts look vaguely interesting

*old mother speak*
WARNING:
*Unwanted advice to disregard if you choose*
Actually, you could* do those dishes, and then feel all smug and proud for being such a good girl. This also allows you a good sized dark treat, which even further improves mood.
Leave any other housekeeping until another day. It'll keep.

I thought the same but didn't dare say so When I was younger I hated washing up with a passion and it has taken years for me to just do it without thinking
I am lucky to be able to watch the birds feeding while I do it now so I am not thinking about it. Mind, it probably takes me twice as long and the water goes cold, if there are lots of feathery friends around.
or wot
Rewarding yourself with for being an girl is a great idea. It puts my weight on but it still works for me
Why do we put off doing things we hate which only makes us feel worse. There's a word for it, but it escapes me at the moment.

Procrastination. There is a society for that right here on h2g2 somewhere. I would join, but I just can't be bothered.

Feeling a little better today...
I think it's from spending far too much time alone in my messy apartment. I cleaned a little last night and it felt like I got something done

It may be a chore doing it but it gives you a warm glow inside

I knew it would work! A bit at the time does the trick, and you can reward yourself as often as you need! For me it's sitting on my butt and looking at the mess that gets to me, but sometimes I need it to work up a good enough disgust to get me going..

Hi, Kaz,
Thanks for that. It just wouldn't come to me and yes, I think I would feel the same about the society. Maybe sometime - see there it is again
