The Cancer Shot

I wrote an email to my mom yesterday, trying to convince her why I should get The Cancer Shot- the new vaccine that protects against HPV.

First off, I want to assure everyone that I'm not putting myself at risk for HPV, nor do I plan to do anything without protection in the future... but sometimes people make mistakes, men lie, and condoms break. And what then? Besides, it's not like I'm planning to get the flu, or measles, or meningitis, or any of the other horrible things I'm immune to now.

I'm within the window, they're offering it at the school, and my insurance covers it- I called and asked. It protects against most strains of HPV, including the two that cause 70% of all cervical cancers. This is a cancer with a fairly good survival rate, and it's caught early most often with pap smears... but... cancer is scary and you don't want to get it.

She called me later- strangely, she was more OK with it than I was. I'm setting up the appointment today.

An wise decision, and an understanding mother. Very nice to hear.

To be honest, until recent adverts on our local radio, I'd never heard the term HPV. (It's nearly 3 decades since I was in school smiley - erm) And so a bit of research, I know a bit more. Including the bit that anyone can have any of the strains, and not even be aware of it. So sometimes, honesty doesn't even really come in to the picture, I'd think.

The cancer shot will not be offered to anyone in this country who has become sexually active.

That's sort of unfair. Some people only have one partner in their entire lives.

It's the same with the meningitis jab. I can't get it because I'm not young enough, or not old enough. Eventually what will happen with meningitis is that it will move from attacking the younger and older generations, and attack those of us who have been denied the jab.

I'd love to get the cancer shot. I'd love to be told that my chances of developing it have dramatically reduced. Mind you, having said that, I've more chance of getting lung cancer. I smoke and my father died of lung cancer.

Hey ho next year when I give up!

Scan,

Hubby's cousin asked her Doctor for a Gene test, as her Great Grandmother, Grandmother, Great Aunt, Mother and three cousins have all had cancer.

The Doctor said the connection wasn't close enough smiley - huh

Needless to say, she is now changing her GP!

If you can protect yourself, in anyway, go for it. smiley - hug

Get it. I got condyloma from one boyfriend (I'm very sure which one, he said to get a checkup but not for what...) but it didn't manifest until years later.

The removal was horrible and the doctor refused me any anestetics - even local.

Get the shot.
