Wiiii

My Wii has arrived! Now to find some time to play on it...

Latest cancer update - biopsy shows no worse than original surgery results. So I have to choose between radical surgery which has a high chance of no recurrence, or biological therapy which sounds fairly unpleasant and around 50% chance of still needing surgery. They've made me go away for 12 days to think about it.

One in three

Apparently one in three people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. I certainly know quite a few who have had it and died, had it and survived or living with it, some curable, some not.

I've become one of the one in 108 women who get bladder cancer. It's one in 40 for men. (Cancer Research UK figs.) Fortunately one of the more treatable sort, if caught early. For my own benefit & for those who like all the detail I've written a full account of the story so far at A84415403. In brief, I've been diagnosed and had a tumour removed. Just waiting for histology results to see if anything else needs doing now. Otherwise it'll be a 3 month follow up to check for recurrence, which is quite common. I'll be followed up for a minimum of 10 years.

I'm feeling optimistic as mine has been detected early. My brother has also had bladder cancer, diagnosed in his 40s & he's now been discharged from follow up. At the moment it feels like the principle feature of my life, but now I'm getting back to my normal routine I hope it will fade into the background.

Phew!

Thankful to hear yesterday morning that my son & Japanese family were safe in an evacuation centre. Today they have returned to their home on the East coast to find that the tsunami stopped 30m short of the house.

So grateful they they are OK & so sad for all the devastated families elsewhere in Japan.

New name

What a lovely drop of sunshine today - makes all the difference smiley - smiley.

It seems a good time to announce that I am to become a Grandma in the Summer. Sadly not as hands on as I'd like as the new baby will be 6,000 miles away smiley - sadface
Perhaps I can read bedtime stories by Skype... smiley - erm

Tragedy

There's no good time for bad news, but it seems especially hard when Christmas is on the horizon. We heard on Friday that the 22 year old daughter of friends has been killed in a skiing accident. Now the parents have to cope with a transatlantic flight to join the rest of their family who live near the ski resort.

It's also close to the anniversary of the death of the daughter (complications from appendicitis) of other friends.

Getting out the Christmas card list is always a reminder of the absentees. Another friend died unexpectedly in the Spring, so that's yet one more to change.

Life can really be tough for some folk.
