Trying a new med: Abilify
Ellen Posted Jul 19, 2004
Hi guys! Hi Willem, Abbi, Jazz, and all.
Well so far the med change is going well. I have gone up on Abilify to 15mg, and down on the Zyprexa. Haven't had any more bad nausea or vomiting, just a touch of queasiness now and then. The new medicine has decreased my appetite and I have lost some weight, which is a good thing, because I am rather overweight, and my old medicine made me gain weight. I feel more alert on the Abilify. And more emotional - when I went to see Fahrenheit the second time, I cried -- the first time in years and years that I have cried at a movie. Usually the Zyprexa makes my emotions somewhat numb. Other minor sideeffects on new med -- slight dizziness if I stand up too fast, metallic taste in mouth, and sometimes something almost like a headache but not quite. I think I can live with a few minor side effects like that, because my moods seem more stable and I seem to have more energy. I like the alertness too. Only thing I am a little worried about is that I am sleeping a good deal less than usual, and I want to make sure that doesn't make me manic. When I am asleep during the day, I now wake up a few times. But I do go back to sleep pretty fast. And on the old meds I was sleeping 12 hours or more a day, so cutting that number back may not be bad. So overall, so far, I give the Abilify a thumbs up.

Wonderful Ellen.
The last time we talked you had just made the last change so it is good to hear
Generally sleeping more than 10 hours or more is considered a negative or sign of one some where in health. Everybody varies but a sound 7-8 hours in which you wake up rested (important also)is a sign of good health.
I think your professional will be as pleased as you.
Reassurance from them will help too.
Sounds very positive for meeting your goals and reasons for changing.

Jellen,
It`s such a drag that we are experimented on until,by chance,we find a medication that helps us!If only one could know at the onslaught of symptions that 'Y' would make them go away...
YEA! you found 1 that works for you

Hi Neugen and all,
Yes, it's great to find something new that (so far!) works well. I think it will continue to improve as my body gets used to the new medication.
One other side effect: I am warm most of the time now, and sometimes even hot. I always used to be cold, and had to carry around jackets all the time. Now I am actually running my upstairs air conditioning some! Wild!

for the anti-Dubya pin picture! This pc IS better-I couldn`t read any letter w/attachments until today.I`d get kicked back to the main mail page when I tried to read anything attached to a letter-so I had to save them~& there`s nothing I want more than something I can`t have..

Hi everyone,
Having some persistent dizziness tonight. I'm hoping it is just a phase.

I'm going to go eat a meal, see if that helps. Haven't eaten anything but a small yogurt since I had dinner at 5:30pm, that may be why.

Hi Kaz, I just had some chicken, potatoes, and veggies, so we will see if that stops the dizziness. I haven't been very hungry on my new med, so I kind of let a long time pass without eating, and not even noticing it.
I not terribly concerned yet, because I know changing meds is a slow process. Not only is my brain having to adapt to the Abilify, but it has to deal with having less Zyprexa. I remember years ago when I got on the Zyprexa, it took several months to feel normal on it.
I was planning on going to a voter registration drive tomorrow, but will have to wait and see how I feel in the morning. Better not drive to the event if I am dizzy at all. Well, these things happen, if I miss it, I miss it. But hopefully I won't feel dizzy after a night's rest and a good breakfast.
