Right guys, first up, apologies for taking liberties.
Pin emailed a revised draft which in my opinion took into account the views expressed here. Lots of points have been made, but they could never all have been addressed in one attention grabbing plea. People aren't going to read a treatise (well, not many will). This is a first step.
You know Pin feels it's urgent to get on and do something. Jodan felt that way when he started all this off, and that was four weeks ago. I've spent a bit of time this last fortnight looking around Peer Review and I can see why they started this and I can see why they want to get on with it.
So I made a judgement that if you were all ok with the original version, bar the 'fighting talk' aspects, then you'd be ok with this one and took the decision to send it off to the Post in the hope that although it missed shazz's deadline by an hour or two, she'd be able to put it in this week's Post. I sent it with all our Unumbers, except sprout's as he's not been online to get back to us.
I'll email Jodan a copy and ask him to forward it round any of the rest of you that he's got emails for.
And now to , and may the PROD be with you.

Jodan's not got your email address. If it's in the thread somewhere I'll pick it up later and send the copy on. Off to work now.

Apologies for not getting back in time. Didn't get near a computer. Have now got some positive thoughts, but let's see how the Post piece goes.

A preview of this week's Post piece should be in all your inboxes now. It's a ball rolling starting point.
Actually I wondered if there was a small sprout of sprout around . Can't be long now.

5 weeks in theory, but I suspect slightly before that - space seems to be becoming an issue... Later is not an option, as my brother leaves for Australia (to emigrate) shortly afterwards, and would like to see his nephew first.

Not such a small sprout then . Have you made things clear to him? Got to start as you mean to go on. If he's late for his birthday you'll never be able to get him in for tea in time.
My father emigrated us to Oz. Turned out to be more of a migration, we were back in six months .

So, from Jodan's list, we've finished up the PROD page and it's in the Post. That leaves 'then we advertise it.
Put it in our nicknames, journals, PR threads ... Community Soap Box'. We can add to that putting a message up at the Undergroup yahoo group. I'll volunteer for that.
It'd be overdoing it if we all put it in our Journals I think.
I wonder how long til comments on the Engine.

J Posted May 11, 2005
I don't think the Post piece will create much stir. Not because it's not excellently done, but because I haven't seen other h2g2 opinion pieces create a stir. It'll be useful for linking to.
(I personally would've prefered to put that stuff into a society-like page that we could have maintained for membership and petition purposes.)
The engine will probably receive comments by the weekend - after the first people have had a chance to finish it

LL Waz Posted May 11, 2005
Can we do the society style page too? I never thought of it. It would be a good idea to overwrite the original Prod entry with this one. We could use that, it's confusing having two different ones.
That'd leave you to update it though. You ok with that? I don't know how societies are usually done. Shared accounts?
Don't disagree about reaction to the Post piece, Community Soap Box usually gets more response but we can point to it from there.
Waz
(PS, you or me sending in the UG piece for Friday? I've got confused who's doing what.)

J Posted May 11, 2005
We can do a shared account. Shared responsibility makes it more likely that it'll continue to exist. The Post, UG and other important groups have not always had the same leaders - their survival is ensured by new generations of people taking responsibility.
I'll send in the UG piece now.

Pinniped Posted May 11, 2005
Don't you guys think it's ever-so-slightly ironoc that you wanted it watered down, and now you start predicting that it won't get a reaction?
And Society-pages are great - if they ever get produced.
Inspire me, Seal-boy.
J Posted May 11, 2005
Well, if it would have gotten a reaction in the full-blown version, it probably would've been an adverse one. Which is not entirely a bad thing, but from my perspective, we should be building up the grass roots end before tearing down with the revolution part.
How about when I'm finished with the UG business, I start a PROD account and email y'all the info? (if I can find everyone's emails... )
Inspire me, Seal-boy.
LL Waz Posted May 11, 2005
It needs back up to get the reaction. A Soapbox thread to point towards it, for one thing. The Post is the right starting place, just not, on it's own, a place that generates much participation in threads. Or that's how it's seemed to me.
Your pointing to it from the Engine PR thread will help. We need to do all we can to encourage as many people as possible to read it. Journal entries from you and Jodan would be good. As I said, I'll put a poster up at the UG group.
Any thoughts on who'd be best starting the Soapbox conversation? I've been complaining there a bit recently.
Inspire me, Seal-boy.
J Posted May 11, 2005
(Waz, just sent you an email for UG)
I think Waz would be the best person to start a Soapbox Conversation. I'd be quick to back it up, of course, being an EG person.
I'll do a journal entry pointing people to the Post article tomorrow when it'll be up.
Inspire me, Seal-boy.
LL Waz Posted May 11, 2005
I got sighed at and asked if I was trying to stir up trouble last time.
I'll do it if you want but ....... and it really does need EG involved back up.
As an h2g2er I know I've as much right to opinions about the EG as anyone but I feel I'm trespassing. Which says something in itself. Though whether about my perceptions or about how PR runs I don't know.
The Soapbox thread needs doing once the Post piece is viewable, which isn't until midmorning I think.
Waz, off to check inbox.
