Translating for a living
Posted Dec 14, 2001
I spend my day translating web-sites and technical documents, which aren't exactly exciting. So you can imagine I was more than a little happy today when my boss come in with a new project for me today... Translating a real book, a 250 page hardback on the history of St.Nazaire shipyards and all the cruise liners they've ever built.
The boss is off to the north of france on monday to talk about price and author's rights etc. But I've already told her that if she doesn't get the contract she'd better not come back to work
Sure as heck would beat translating "The implementation of the ISO 9001 Quality Managment System", "Maintenance Manual for an ZY485 Reactor Coolant Pressure Safety Valve" and other such meaningless junk

Moderation

Wow
In less than a week I've had an entry on the "most overlooked" list and I've had my links page moderated.
I've arrived, I'm a real researcher at last

My opinion of events around the site
Posted Nov 12, 2001
I think that 99% of regular researchers must be aware of the events of Friday. My opinion is very simple.
Get a life folks!
This site is owned and run by the BBC, if you don't like that, or don't like any of their decisions, either put up with it or go elsewhere.
If you were in a Pub and, either intentionally or unintentionally, insulted the Landlord, what would happen? You'd either apologise, or you'd get kicked out. Continuing to argue with the aforementionned Landlord won't get you anywhere, except being barred for life from your favourite pub.
So what would you do in Real Life:
1) Buy the landlord a drink and say sorry - even if you think he was wrong, it's a nice pub and you like the atmosphere.
or
2) Stay very quiet until things blow over.
or
3) Decide this isn't the pub for you, and take your custom elsewhere.
Who amongst you would just carry on argueing, despite the fact that you're not going to win? In the meantime, the Landlord's going to get more and more fed up until he does something to get you out of his hair?
This is a personal opinion, and as with all comments I make on this site, please feel free to disregard it. However, try not to make too much noise in the meantime, I can't hear the jukebox for all the racket.
