The Wicked Witch of the West cackled evilly.knowing that she had Paulh to do with as she wished. He could tell from the green glow in her eyes that she wished some mighty unpleasant things for him. Mother Nature had plans of her own, however. A freak cloud suddenly appeared overhead and poured rain on the witch, who melted to nothing in just a minute or two.

Once again Paulh was left without a wife for the day. His right was similarly bereft. Well, there was always Glinda. He set off down the yellow brick road toward what he thought was Munchkinland. About a mile down the road, he heard what sounded like a freight train. Turning around, he saw a cyclone bearing down on him. Or a bear cycloning down on him. Whatever!

He ran into a cottage by the side of the road, where he watched the cyclone roll past. An elderly lady with two ugly daughters were getting dressed for a ball, while a third daughter was cleaning ashes and soot from the chimney. Of the four, only the third daughter was at all kind to him. She brought him pumpkin cookies and blackcurrant tea.

"Are you Cinderella?" he asked.

"No, I'm Ashley," the girl replied, "but Cinderella is a better name.I think I'll use it. What can I do to repay your for such a clever name?"

"Well, I'd like you to be my wife for the day."

"That would be nice, but I was hoping to go to the ball tonight and fall in love with the Prince. I don't think he would appreciate competition for my hand."

"All right, then, do you have a fairy godmother who would like a husband just for the day?"

Suddenly a middle-aged woman with a wand and a twinkle in her eye appeared. "I thought you'd never ask!" she said with a hearty chuckle.

Just then there was a knock at the door. Cinderella/Ashly opened it. Standing in the doorway was a man in a black cowl with a scythe who said he had a telegram for Paulh.....

The story doesn't mention how the Grim Reaper got to Cinderella's house. If He lives south of 34th street, chances are he didn't take the subway to get there unless He's got scuba diving gear.

In the next episode,Paulh will find himself in an even more preposterous situation.
