Presumably because they're not out actively looking for Pokémon. The Pokédex in the game was given to trainers who were going out into the world, so they could record information of all the Pokémon they encountered as research for Professor Oak.
I'm guessing the same could apply to the anime as well - that trainers are looking at new Pokémon and getting information for the Professors. I'd imagine that the properties of a wild Pokémon are different to those of a tame one, since the latter has the experience of human interaction, so it's behaviour would change - not much good for a Professor who needs to know how a wild Pokémon acts.
I don't remember him having the Pokégear (although I didn't watch the third movie very much). But I'd guess that because he wasn't originally a Johto trainer, that he wouldn't get one as standard. Mind you, in the GSC games, it was your trainer's mother who bought the Pokégear, so I'd imagine that Pokégears aren't free, thus the reason Ash didn't have one.

Oh, and just as an off-topic?
Today marks the seven-year anniversary of the creation of this topic. Amazing how far we've come, huh?

Whoa. It's staggering how far we both must've come in our lives in seven years. Here are a few flashbacks in celebration:
Your first post:
"OKIES - I LOVE Cardcaptors, Pokémon and Digimon - wanna talk about them? (I have only seen a few Cardcaptors at a friend's house, but I LOVE IT!!!)
x-Sailor Mercury-x"
Ah, to be young again.
I was thinking of reposting the first quiz I gave you, but we'd probably both be embarassed about how much we've forgotten. In any event, happy anniversary. You still hold the record as my longest online friend.
Just in case I've never posted this before, here's another piece of my Internet history. A list of quotes that Digimon characters would never say. It's so old that I actually sent my real name with it.

Yeah, wow.. Seeing how I was seven years ago is just an embarrassment, haha. I was just 15 when I wrote that! Although to my credit, I did know how to use the ALT codes for the é.
But it did spark off this awesome online friendship, and I think I've known (and continued to speak to you) for longer than any other person I know online. So that's pretty awesome stuff.
I think that it'd be amusing for both of us to try to figure out the answers to those questions again. The Cardcaptors ones would probably be lost on me now.. Indigo League Pokémon is about all I'm suss at nowadays.
I didn't ever see that list, but that's a pretty awesome bit of not-quoting you did there. Awesome.

Azulongmon: Can anyone tell me why I gave a digivice to Mimi? Anyone?
You can almost hear the crickets chirp, can't you?

Azulongmon, one of the four gods of the Digital World. Giant dragon guy. A Chinese dragon (very long winged serpent thing with legs), not European dragon (large fire-breathing winged dinosaur). He has a number of Digicores that are basically just powerful MacGuffins. By giving one to our heroes he weakened himself to allow the kids to Digivolve their Digimon back to Ultimate and Mega. He also created the Digivices and gave them to Gennai's people. Then Myotismon stole one of them (Gatomon's). It just gets more convoluted from there.

Which series was this? If it was anything past the tail end of the second season, I won't have seen it.
... If it WAS in that time frame, then shame on me, I say!
Anime
Infinite Improbability Posted Jun 7, 2008
It was second season, just before the World Tour. I'm glad, for it was nice to see the older 01 Digimon in battle again.

Oh.. I honestly don't remember that! I'll have to give it a look-in sometime.

Uh, how? They never released complete seasons of Digimon on VHS or DVD, did they? I have the first few tapes of 01 and some random ones from later 01 and 02. I also have some Frontier on home tape, thank goodness.

I recorded as many episodes as I could of the first two seasons on video when they were on the telly. I know that all of Season One is on YouTube, and possibly Season Two.

Wow, it's been a while. I've been really busy lately, but I did recently get the new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. How about you?
Anime
Infinite Improbability Posted Jul 4, 2008
I still don't have a handheld game more recent than Crystal, nor console game more recent than Stadium 2. I keep meaning to get Emerald, but I haven't gotten around to it yet...

Hi!
I totally just had a massive "Damn, I've not been to H2G2 in forever!" thought as you do at 6.20am.
Things have been really hectic at home for the past three months, so I apologise for my absence. How's things for you?

Oh, things are about the same. I had my first date in a few years, that was kinda exciting.
