Holiday
Posted Dec 22, 2007
Two weeks of not having to go to work. Lovely! Shame it's also day 3 of a stinking cold The dogs want to go for a walk but I don't want to go out sneezing, coughing and dripping into the cold. They usually get their way though. I read somewhere that the common cold should last about 2 days. I wonder why mine always seem to last at least a week and a half. I get one about every 3 years and I get flu about once every 10 years - usually for the xmas/new year holiday Should be grateful I suppose. One of my partners claims to have flu every few months. No doubt it's just a coincidence that these bouts of his always follow hot on the heels of a night of heavy boozing. Ah well. Mustn't be a hypocrite. I'm just thinking about having a medicinal splash of whisky myself
The Merry Christmas issue of The Post is up and it's absolutely choka. There are 8 Earthling poems, 2 Vogon poems, 5 seasonal stories, an environmental article, a couple of games, 6 cartoons and 4 news-related links. The poems, stories and environmental article are in a competition and you can vote for one item from each category. I agonised over which to vote for - terribly torn, but eventually made up my mind. My Yule story is in the prose section of the competition. I was surprised to find it there. It doesn't stand a chance of winning, but as there can only be one winner, it'll be honoured to be a loser in very good company
When this nasty virus loosens its grip on my ears, nose, throat and lungs, I might think about writing a little story about 'cold'
Season's greetings to all

Yippee

Just a quick one to say Yahoo and Yippee
My "Decay" A29760276 has appeared on h2g2's front page today. Very cheering just when I could use a bit of cheering
I'm trying to do a positive, optimistic seasonal story at the moment. It's like pulling teeth. Talk about swimming against the tide of your own nature!
Ah well. Must crack on. If I dig deep enough, I'm bound to find some long-forgotten remnant of bright optimism buried inside myself. I couldn't always have been such an old grump

Another birthday
Posted Dec 7, 2007
Last week I missed my celebration of another story in The Post. I forgot because I was in a lot of pain. Nothing new there then. But I can't let The h2g2 Post's Eighth Birthday go by without marking the day
Last week it was "A Spirit of Discord" and this week it's "Reflections". AND the lovely people at The Post have made an archive page for my stories: A29873118

Whinge or burst

Can I be the only person to have noticed this terrible thing about life:
However much kak there is crushing you down and messing you up, there's always more where that came from.
I've never understood that sickly phrase, "Never mind - it could be worse." It's about the least comforting thought imaginable, for anyone who's already up to their neck in it - and knows that if it can get worse then it certainly will get worse.
Anyway. I just wanted to get that out of my system. And where else could I deposit such a negative sentiment. Thank goodness for h2g2.

Today we are 52
Posted Nov 24, 2007
Who's we? Well, me and Ian Botham among others were born 24/11/55. Actually, let's see. What is six billion world population divided by 365 days divided by say an average age of 70. It's a lot of people, isn't it? I wonder if it's a British six billion or a US six billion. It's a big difference. UK is 6,000,000,000,000 and US is 6,000,000,000. Hmm. Hadn't thought about that before
Anyway, I hope old Ian's having a good day.
