It's usually the belts that go in washing machines, and that's pretty easy to fix, but the 'grind grind hiss' sounds a bit smiley - weird

I rescued the clothes from the washing machine yesterday.

In the next couple of days, time permitting, I'll have a bash at taking the back off of the machine. If the damage looks fixable I'll fix it; or more accurately get someone else to fix it. If it looks terminal then it's time for a bit of planning.

What I might well do is replace it with a washer-drier. OK so that's another £150 or so on the price, but what it would do is free up the space in the bathroom where I currently keep my tumble-drier. And you never know, I might get £30 or so in flogging that smiley - smiley

Bassman - Funny how people never ceases to amaze me!

The last washing machine I fixed was making a grinding clicking sound. On inspection I found one of the underwires from a bra caught between the inner and outer drums. It was making a lot of noise, but there again it was a rather large underwire!!

Hope yours isn't the same problem, else you've got a bit of explaining to do Mr Desk smiley - biggrinsmiley - tongueout

No it's the belt and motor that are knackered. It's not really worth repairing the thing as it's so old the parts are hard to come by and horribly expensive.

Currently I am investigating replacing it with a washer-dryer at around the £350 mark.

And six months later, I am *still* looking for the three-hundred and fifty quid to invest in a new washer-drier smiley - erm

smiley - yikes

Does that mean you have not done any washing for 6 months?

Something just went bang...

Post 13

GreyDesk

No, it means that I've been driving down to the local laundrette with a whopping great suitcase full of dirty laundry every two weeks for the last six months.

Actually, I suspect that 2 weeks of GD washing would be rather smelly...

GD - there are some great bargains to be had in the pre-Christmas sales.

Or, have you heard of interest-free credit?

When I moved here, I didn't bring my old washer, as it wouldn't fit the space. (it was ten years old & never broke down once)smiley - wah

I couldn't afford a brand-new washer in one go, so I got one from PowerHouse - paid £8.50 a month for sex months then settled up - could have carried on paying the £8.50 for three years but it would have been at 29.5% so be careful out there smiley - yikes

My new kitchen is so tiny my tumble drier is on a shelf in the garage. The garage is behind the security gates - so that's fun, running between raindrops to fetch dry washing, locking, unlocking, lifting heavy garage doors, trying to shut garage door & keep wahsing dry while trying to find keys I stupidly put in my pocket while sorting said dry washing.

Laundry. Pah. I'd rather be on a beach in Spain. Naked sunbathing. No need to do any washing then, smiley - laugh

* checking old journals *

And two years later, I still haven't replaced the washing machine. One, I've not really had the finances available recently to invest in luxury purchases. And two, I actually find the launderette more convenient than a washing machine; you can do the whole lot in one go, and not have to faff around with all manner of different loads and settings smiley - ok

A washing machine is *not* a luxury.

A dishwasher, however...

I've simply not missed it. The launderette is 100 yards or so up the road, and the pub is about another 50 beyond for whilst you're waiting for your smalls to process. It all works just fine smiley - smiley
