Ah.
Sadly no.
The British food store that set up a booth at
our British Motoring Festival did not bring any
marmite to the show. They focused on teas and
biscuits and some sweet jams, marmalades and
Devon creams.
I later visited their store and could not bring
myself to invest in the $8 jars they had without
a sample taste and they would not provide one.
That said I did buy some of their pasties and
a few meat pies in spite of their lack of good
customer relations in offering free samples of
unknown Marmitian substances.

Happily, their store is a good 70 miles from my home
and somewhat off my usual mazeway so it is unlikely
I will be in their neighborhood again now until the
Spring weather allows me to wander the back roads,
top down, in my TR6. I did love their pies.

Well.
I was in a cafe yesterday when I saw one of these:-

Remembering the Marmite thread, I bought it with the idea of posting it to Canada. Would that pose you a problem with customs?
I am more than happy to post it to you so long as you don't get a visit from the Dept of Fisheries and Food (or equivalent).
I have a large jar in my cupboard. I am an Evangelist from the Church of Marmite.
Robin.

Wow. Yes.
I am delighted to accept your kind and generous offer!
Do you have an email link on your homepage
so I can send you my postal mailing address?
There is an email link on my old homepage
http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A2684478
It's just below and to the left of the map image.
But I don't know if it works because clicking
it just now it showed me the correct address
at Yahoo.ca but it also tried to open Windows
Outlook and my gmail program blocks that.
Basically it's my full name johnwfulton
plus the number 13 being at Yahoo.ca

As far as Customs is concerned I think at this time of
year with Xmas gifts being mailed around the whirled,
it would be simply a matter of marking the wrapping
with a postal declaration that the contents were a
'gift' (true) and contained a 'marmalade sample'.

Yay!
It has arrived and I have tried it.
I sent you an email with further details
but suddenly my yahoo mail is acting weird.
It shows the lists of emails in my inbox, sent,
drafts, etc but when I open any one of them
there is no message text.
The sender addresses, date, CCs, BCCs are
all listed and the date and subject line are there
but the body copy, the message area is blank.
I noticed this after I sent you my thanks for the
packet of Marmite packets and double checked
it in the sent files.
When I checked all my other sent and inbox files
it was the same thing - so I'm hoping what I sent
reaches you and the problem is temporary and
just with my files.
If you get a blank email from me let me know.
Basically it was a big thank you for your kind
consideration and generosity of spirit. Now I
know what Marmite is!

E-mail recieved.
You are most welcome. Odd stuff though isn't it. It took a while to arrive didn't it!
I have often wondered how some different foodstuffs evolve. Who was the first person to think of adding the extract from a cow's stomach to milk and gathering together the lumps? And then eating them!
And then thinking 'If I leave these, squashed together for a couple of months, that would be a good idea'.
I LOVE cheese.
So who came up with the idea of gathering the scrapings from the bottom of the barrel (almost literally) and eating them? And then coming up with the idea of adding salt and spices to make it even better?
You prompted me to have marmite on toast for breakfast this morning - after all I have that 20 ton load spilled on the motorway to get through!
Robin.

I dare say the recipe of salt and spices
is a well guarded secret. But this morning's
toast had the same mysterious salty-vinegar
base with hints of some other familiar but
unidentifiable ingredients. I do suspect some
citric element - perhaps ground orange peel.
