I grew up in radio stations and became a child actor in CBC radio dramas. This lead me into radio announcing as a teenager in the 60s and then into television and films as an actor, writer and/or producer. But none of these has ever provided me with a satisfactory living.

Perhaps if I had chosen to focus on any one of those career paths and removed myself to a market larger than Halifax Nova Scotia I might have met with more success. They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway.... smiley - musicalnote

Strangely enough, Hollywood discovered Halifax as a location just over ten years ago and many major films have been made here including Titanic, K-19 and others, but local actors were usually only hired as extras on the big projects.

There have also been dozens of less famous films, such as you see in my incomplete IMDb film credits list, and a recent rash of Made for TV (MOWs) for which I am sometimes hired to do small speaking parts.

I suppose in Nova Scotia I am almost famous. At least a character I portray has become very well known and the butt of many jokes. Every winter, for more than ten years, I have been the Big Brotherly face on local TV commercials representing the Provincial Department of Highways warning people to keep out of the way of 'my' snowplow.

In tomorrow's smiley - thepost you'll find my report on working with Cybill Shepherd last Sunday. It should give you some better perspective of the situation and an insight into my resigned bitterness. smiley - biggrin

"A child actor in CBC radio shows..."

Hmm. How interesting.
I think one of these days we ought to futz around and do an interview with you for the Post.

I will write specific questions and you can tell specific lies in reply....

Then we can actually talk...
of course, we could just use the thread or the emails as the interview, but I think that would be too recherche...

then we can later use the result as your BBC obituary...

Ever since I have been on here I have always been curious as to whether there actually any famous people on here, trying to escape from the prying eyes of the world. I find fame a curious thing. Its being well known, and the more people who happen to know your name the more famous you are. In my town I'm probably moderately famous, beyond that not many people know me, other than a few cousins, uncles aunts and my ex-girlfriend. But does that make me any less of a person? I certainly hope not.

I'm 20, and so I have no idea how my life will unfold, and perhaps I will one day become famous for one reason or other, but I do not aspire to be so. I mean my credits to my name so far are about 5 seconds of being on british TV when I was about 8, and a few school plays(I did want to be an actor when I was much younger).

Anyway, getting back to my point, I think it must be a huge invasion in to peoples privacy to be in the media spotlight all the time, and so it would appear more than likely that they would take a great relief in having a community were they are free to mingle with others anomynously.

Anyway, thanks jwf for your insights smiley - ok

All the best

>> ..curious as to whether there actually any famous people on here..<<

I bet everyone thinks that and not just once or twice in passing curiosity. Several times I believed I was talking to Paul MacCartney. For some it must become an obsession. Others may decide that there aren't any famous folks here (at least not admitting it) and go off in search of celebs at other sites.

You however are one of the few to admit to this curiosity. It is not often discussed here and that is a shame. Oh yes, there was an Ask h2g2 thread called 'How tenuous are your connexions to the rich and famous...' which produced some hilarious postings and quite a few about several famous people known to some researchers.

Because of the way the question was phrased it produced no direct confessions from any rock stars and supermodels. But I know they're here. smiley - bigeyes I can smell 'em and I can feel 'em. Not necessarily in that order.

Perhaps you should start a new Ask h2g2 question and see if we can lure them out of their hidey holes.
