That guy works at the Smithsonian. I'm quite sure he knows those snakes are utterly harmless. They're just rat snakes - useful and pretty.

I've only seen human snakes
Never had the chance/opportunity to actually hold a snake

Down in North Carolina, we were sitting in our screen porch. Elektra said, 'Aw, look! There's a lizard looking at us through the screen!'

It reared up and stared at her. 'Oh, no! That's not a lizard! That's a snake!' And she jumped up.

I started laughing. It was one of those rat snakes. It's harmless - it eats mice and rats. I called the office and warned them to tell all the Yankees in the complex not to freak.

Our "natural" snake is an adder/viper, but very rare and mostly down the west coast area (I think ?)

Are they venomous?
