Arriving in Alaska-1965
I remember that there was no longer a deposit on Pop bottles.
I'd often enriched myself by keeping an eye the ditches of Arizona
and taking a mornings bounty to the store to be turned in for 2 cents each,
the money soon spent on comics, candy and coke.

Allowance alone would have to get me along from now on, barely comic money.
And then I spent a bit of my "Alaska" money on soda and candy.
A soda that cost almost twice what one should have cost and held no return value.
My unhidden dipleasure was turned to utter aghastness when
I opened the Hershy bar and it was white. Chocolate with severe frost bite.
I quickly came to learn that 2 weeks old was new, and 6 months old was fresh baked.
To make things worse, all the comics I saw in the stores on the way into Alaska were older issues,
World's Finest I'd read long ago.
No longer were we in the land of color television and midnight movies.
The 2 TV stations we had came on the air late and went off early.
The color of Batmans car was much in debate just before one station started
broadcasting color several hours a day.
How could this happen to me, in the prime of my childhood,
to be taken from the cutting edge of technology and
thrown back 100 years to a place where I was even forced to
sleep before sundown. I'd always played and traveled in
areas where others had been. And now I was certain that I'd been
to places that no one had been before me.
at least not in memories of any human alive. I was an explorer that could at any moment discover the
lost city of the north. Or find the stream littered with fist sized nuggets.
Animals around me had always been dogs, cats, cows and deer.
Now the animals were Moose and Bear, Wolves and hungry.
