Choices, and then some

Okay, here I am stuck with the most delightful of all dilemmas...choosing between two different grad schools, and not knowing which one to pick. Yet all things are leaning toward UC Irvine. Catholic has religious studies departments, but doesn't seem terribly concerned with accepting me. Irvine, on the other hand, wants me, but doesn't have the religion aspect. Washington DC vs. Orange County. Culture vs. couture.

ACH! Oy vey! Rats!

My Tattoo

Okay, so everybody and their dog is getting tattoos these days. But that makes no difference to me. I wanted one, I got one, and damnit, I feel good about it. It made me feel tribal, primal, powerful, and, once the endorphins kicked in, quite giddy. I love it. It is something that belongs to me, to my world.

Fraulein Grafenberg was wonderful: she held my hand, smiled at me, let me know that it was okay to feel a bit of pain and squeeze as hard as I needed to. And there were moments there I darn near broke her hand. It's wonderful to have a friend who will hold your hand and smile while some insanely overpierced boy is drilling ink into your skin. Three cheers and hats off to the Fraulein!

A Night with the Girls

Wow. A night out with two women that need to get out more often. My two friends, let's call them A and B, are so ANGRY! Friend A, the mother of 4, including a relatively new baby, has just finalized her divorce to a seriously misguided man, who decided, the week before her baby was due, to announce that he was leaving her for another woman. YIKES! While I understand her anger, she was just so bitchy tonight. And when this boy (and oh, is he a boy!) informed her that he really likes her, but that the idea of dating a recently divorced woman with 4 kids scares him, she tore into the poor thing with all of the rage she has yet to direct at her ex. I felt sorry for the guy.
And Friend B, who was recently dumped by her boyfriend of 3 years, and decided to rebound with another man we all know, got mad that he didn't show up at his usual bar. She hadn't made a date, or anything so simple, but she was mad nonetheless. It was ugly.
And then there was me, just hanging out, trying to apologize, be nice, make amends. I am exhausted.

Meeting Marv (part 1)

Tomorrow, the Fraulein Grafenberg and I meet Marv, the Archbishop, at the airport at noon. Wait, what am I saying! We meet Marv in about 12 hours. I don't know that I would say I'm nervous, but there is something about the safety (anonymity) of the cyberworld that I find comforting. And that wall will be breached. Will he think we're just freaks? Will he be disappointed that we aren't as witty in real life as we are here? Will we like him? Will it be a good thing all the way round? YIKES!!! So many questions. I have to say that I am, truly, looking forward to introducing him to Moose Drool, and life outside the Zion Curtain. It will be fun, no matter what...

Graduating Spouses

Well, my husband, at the age of 36, is now a college graduate. Can't believe it, really. It took him a long time to realize that he hated serving tables, and that perhaps something else lay in store for him. And thus, we have a man with a BFA in Sculpture. The best thing he's ever done is the mortarboard he welded from steel and wore for graduation. It had a lot of meaning to him, to me, and to many others. A statement, if you will.
What I would not recommend is trying to take a small child to a college graduation. How boring! The small one kept telling me she was bored and wanted to go home, and I kept hoping someone (namely the speaker) would get to the point and get the show on the road. It took nearly 2 hours, and man, that was the worst two hours I have EVER spent with my child. She was just about ready to hit me, and I was losing every inch of patience I had. Ugly, really. I told my husband last year that I was NOT going to put him through that, but then realized that the history department throws a much better shindig...
