Ahh, the joys of being 14 again...trust me older isn't necessarily better...just filled with exams and the same age of boy (ie your grow up they still have toddlers down their pantssmiley - winkeye)

Well I should probably introduce myself...very impolite not to have already, I'm Em (Emz, Emilina, Emily, Halo, Fred, numpty...the name range goes on and onsmiley - smiley) I'm 17, come from Scotland, I'm still at high school but basically exclusively studying art (after current exams 2 to go yet! argh), I have 2 sister both who have h2g2 pages and yes Cilla all people from Scotland are mad and enjoy a laugh and talk jibberish, lol. Sorry, my brain's a bit fried since the exams started.

Anyway I saw your name up on the "who's online" list and I was interested (I like music alot and interesting "lyrics" usually provoke me to buy music by very strange bands.) so i thought I'd drop you a line and say hello...

Anyway, I just thought I'd say hey and now I'm off to bug some other poor soul with an interesting namesmiley - smiley

thankyou for bugging me. It's very nice to be bugged. I think.

Ah, yes, exams. I have mine in 5 days, not nearly enough time to study. Awful. Not looking forward to them indeed. But I shall survive. My favourite subjects are maths, and science, and english, and italian. I can never decide which one is my actual fave, but anyhow.

Well, I come from Australia (yes, it does exist, they didn't just make it up to put funny cartoons of kangaroos in your textbooks). In a town called Perth. I think there's a Perth in Scotland, too.

The name Lyric is actually borrowed from someone I saw on TV a while back, the founderess of something-or-other, anyhow, I thought it was a cool name, and so I stole it. No, borrowed. I will give it back, I promise. Maybe. My real name is Amber, though what is reality and what isn't is for you to judge. Or something.

If you want a CD with weird lyrics, get hold of "Diorama", by Silverchair (an aussie band). One of their songs has the lines:

"You brighten my life like a polystyrine hat/but it melts in the sun like a life without love "

...and the rather obvious...

"violent, big and violent/like a thing that's big, big and violent".

They may be good musicians, but their lyrics are almost as deranged as the beatles' are.

good luck with the rest of your exams

Perth...oh yes there's definetly a Perth in Scotland...about half an hour down the road from where I live...smiley - ghostspooky!

And I know Silver Chair haven't got the album but it's been recomended by many a friend...and the Beatles smiley - ghost who am I listening to at this exact moment in time? The Beatles!

Exams are the pits, I've just finished mine and on Monday will go into 6th year which I'll barely have anything to do...my fav subjects are Art and computing and English but the prospect of the teachers I would get for Advanced Higher put me off completely, anyway I don't even know how I'll do in my Higher...will have to wait until the 14th (ahhh!) to find out.

I loved Biology as well but dropped it as was struggling and wasn't getting helped (mixed class of int 2 and higher, not good) but hey, I can still say the phases of Mitosis off by heart so it can't be all bad.

Currently music wise I'm very into Badly Drawn Boy, Incubus, Oasis, The FooFighters and The Strokes...plus the Beatles, but most people do and they should have been called the "Foetles"...

smiley - laugh that's funny, all those co-incidences.

I have heard a little bit of badly drawn boy on the radio, and it sounds rather quite very good. (Sorry, the exams have drained my brain. I feel like I can't string two words together).

One of my friends was very sick on the first day of the exams, and didn't come to school, so she's still waiting to find out if she can sit them, which is causing me stress, I don't know why, she's not worried, but I am rather concerned for her. I have one exam to go, on monday, for Studies of Society and Environment, which is a dud subject anyhow, so it doesn't really matter, but i just can't wait to get all of my results back, because they will determine what subjects I can choose for next year and the year after. I am hoping to get into Introductory Calculus and Geometry and Trigonometry, for which I need an A in maths, Physics and Chemistry, for which I need an A in science and maths, and English literature, for which I need an A in English. Oh, and Italian, but there isn't a prequisite for that. So, the stress is rather getting to me. Especially for english, because its very hard to tell if one has done well or not in the exams without getting one's results back. I hope that i do get into lit, because the teacher for yr 11 and 12 (i'm in yr. 10 now) is really cool, and quite insane. She's heavily into Douglas Adams and Monty Python. We don't change year levels until the beginning of feburary.

My sister taught me how to play chess today. I am rather bad at it. She is two years younger than me, and beat me three times. grr.

Over here you'd be the same year as my little sister, (4th) seems like years since I was at that stage, took (then) Biology, Chemistry, English, Art, Geography, French, HE and Maths, my Standard Grades were a mixture of good and bad, mostly good and nothing disasterous.

Last year, (5th) my HIghers, I took Administration, Geography, Art, INformation Systems and English...results are due 13th of August.

This year (well as Monday I was in my 6th year) I'm taking Advanced Higher Art, Art and Photography and Business Management, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it as I've got loads of free periods and classes I both love and can do well.

Insane teachers are great (especially if they like DNA and Monty Pythonsmiley - winkeye), I had a complete space gadet for english in 3/4th yr, she was a great laugh and my infosys teach last year was great as she let us listen to our own music and spent half her time telling us to turn it up...and as for the school's art department, they're just all mad and really easy to talk to, some more than others, MR Henderson's a bit weird as says he hates talking loads but always does, Mr Waddle I've had since 1st year and he's just really supportive about my work and we can fight without the threat of being sent to the Rector and Mr Maxwell is great, he's the youngest and lets us listen to music, swear and talks as much crap as we do, lol.

Badly Drawn Boy is great, try The Hour of Bewilderbeast and THe About a Boy Soundtrack, both are brilliant and are never out of my CD player.

What other bands/singers do you like?

Well, I'm mostly into Australian bands at the moment. Something for Kate really do rock, but you probably haven't heard of them. They did get voted album of the year last year, though, with Echolalia.

Hmmm, what else....Well, I just bought the Betchadupa album (the alphabetchadupa) and that is really very great. (They're actually from New Zealand) The lead man of the band is Liam Finn, son of Neil Finn (of Crowded House and Split Enz fame, who I also love). They sound a lot like the beatles, except with a more modern feel.

And of course, there is Alex Lloyd, who is another australian. His music can be rather annoying, (especially his singing), but, if one is in the right frame of mind, can be very nice too.

And as I mentioned earlier, Neil Finn, who is just an incredible songwriter/performer. I do like his second solo album (One Nil) better than his first (Try whistling this) , though.

And, at the moment, I am saving up (I don't have a job, so I have to rely on my parent's charity) to buy the new Moby album.

I got my exam results back yesterday, and (thank god) my marks were good enough to get into all the subjects that I want to do later on. I was especially pleased with my science mark, where I got only missed out on 4.5 marks, and since the exam was out of 100 marks, I got 95.5%. So that was really very good, all the hard study payed off!

thanks! It's a big relief, now that they are over.

A lot of people have said that moby's new album is not as original as his first...but i suppose it really does depend on the individual's tastes, doesn't it?

The good thing about my mum is that she really doesn't mind contributing to CD's, because most of what I listen to, she likes as well. And the stuff that she doesn't like, either my younger brother or sister like, and will contribute to, so I really don't have any problems. In fact, the only person who doesn't put in for my CD collection is my Step-dad (but he likes Willie Nelson and Neil Diamond, what can you expect? The other day I did hear him singing some silverchair, though, which was funny...smiley - laugh )

My highers are over but I've got to wait until the 13th of August to find out how I've done...luckily I won't start panicking until a couple of weeks before.

My mum's got great taste in music, she's always stealing my CD's and "forgetting" to bring them back smiley - laugh dad on the other hand is currently into Radiohead and Talvin Sihng which isn't exactly my cuppa tea. Good but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them.

I'm actually writing a thing about h2g2 researchers Top 10 CD's (A768567) which is really interesting, looking at everyone's fav CD's and tracks, problem is my list is gonna change soon because I keep thinking "argh i should have put that one in...and that! Argh!" smiley - laugh

That's a rather impressive entry you have there! I would post on it, but I couldn't possibly try to collate my top ten CD's. Too hard, like you said, because one keeps thinking of things that one has left out!

Well, I am on music camp at school this week, which means that instead of going to school I go to the music room (in free dress, thank god, not uniform) and our concert bands (like orchestras) and choirs practise for three days solid. I play bass clarinet in the concert band, regular clari in the senior jazz, and sing in two choirs, so my throat is very sore from all of the work that we have done today. Have you read the belgariad series by David Eddings? Well, anyhow, if you have, my friends and I have a rather funny parody attatched to it, where Garion is rather stupid ("Aunt Pol, why do golims wear dresses? "), and there is a boy from our brother school (I go to an all-girls school, but the concert band is mixed, because we didn't have any trumpeters) who looks very much like we imagine Garion. Kind of like Doey off Malcom in the Middle.

Yeah, my school too. Apparently, we aren't allowed to dye our hair AT ALL, but many people turn up with bright pink streaks, and no one says anything, which is kind of annoying, because I hide a piece of my hair that I dyed white in my ponytail, and everyone else gets away with their hairstyles!
