So long as you got it, it doesn't really matter...
Remember, it's "berkeley", not "berkley" as you might expect, and there was no "www"...

OK, Mina... I've stuck it at the bottom of this page - http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A603163 - as a link. I've tested the link, and it works, so if you *still* can't get to it, then there's some problem with your ISP's DNS configuration...
If you can get on, the *very first* thing you need to do is download the latest client. They changed the data format slightly at the same time as the address changed, which is probably why your current client isn't picking up any new units. I suspect the address change was to force people to get rid of old clients which were cluttering up the system with "noise"...

It's still not working.
If it's the fault you say, how can I change it so that it works? I've been with ntl for ages, so why it would suddenly stop working I don't know. My version is 3.03, is there anywhere else I can download a new one? Maybe that will help me.

Actually, when I've got a bit more time I'm going to try with my other ISP. I'll have to reinstall that, so can't do it right this minute.

That worked! As soon as I was connected to Freeserve it went by itself! And I can get to the site!
What's NTL done that means I can't connect with them anymore? I've got the latest software from SETI...
Thanks for your help.

Well done, babe.
When I had the same problem, I was on ntl.
I still am.
It's a mystery to me still!
I thought these nice folks would be able to help you
Currently 218 units done {347 if you include the ones in TCK's total}

Perhaps NTL think they're being kind to their subscribers by blocking non-standard data packets in case they turn out to be some sort of cracker activity... That still doesn't explain why you can't see the website though. I'd e-mail NTL's support desk and ask whether there was a problem with their DNS system which would explain this. Otherwise, I'd suggest you ask a friend who's knowledgable in the black arts of the web to set up your browser to use Freeserve for your primary DNS, even when you're logged on to NTL...
(fyi, Mina, "DNS" = Domain Name Server, a computer at your internet provider which takes a "person-readable" URL like "www.whatever.zot" (Moderators note - that's not a real URL - it's an example. There's no such TLD as ".zot" - please don't remove it!) and converts it into the numeric equivalent your browser needs to find the computer which hosts the domain, something like "192.168.0.1". If SETI's site isn't listed in the table held on NTL's DNS machine, you won't be able to access the site. Which sounds like the problem you're having...)

Ok thanks again. I'm not sure if I have a black arted friend or not, I'll ask around. In the meantime I'll mail NTL as you suggest. I don't want to have to keep connecting to Freeserve. The very thought makes my blood run cold!

Take a look:

Our Peta asked for an entry on seti@home, that's what I've written so far, let me know what you think?
If you have anything to add, I'll add you as a researcher
That goes for any passing participants/lurkers, hangers on, members of the B-17 fan club...

The last 5 units I ran all came back with Result corrupt when I uploaded them.
I then downloaded 2 more, so I have 3 to upload, but haven't had the time I hope they are ok. Poor machine has been idle for 2 days now
I am not sure if I have been credited with the last 5 results, but if I have then I am only 41 units off 500
However at this rate it'll be the end of the year. Ideally I would like to get my 500 before Dec 1st, cos that'll be me having crunched for an entire year. Lets hope I can get this littelproblem sorted soon
I left a message in the same thread as Adrzil GB

In case anyone wonders, I didn't get an answer from NTL, but the unit I downloaded by connecting to Freeserve went with no problem, and I got a new one without even noticing. So either NTL fixed it, or it was that unit corrupting things.
B-17, how do you do more than one unit on your machine at a time?

Babel17 Posted Oct 6, 2001
I didn't get credited witht he units after all. Back down to 455 units
Mina, I only process one unit at a time, but I have a prog that caches them for me, so I can download lots, process them and upload them all at same time. (saves time and connections, also hits Berkley less)

Mina, I could do two units at a time on this machine if I could be bothered figuring it out...
I've got two processors running under Windows 2000, and apparently I could set up two different command-line clients in two different directories, then set them up to run as "background services".
I haven't done this because it makes it really hard to shut it down in a hurry when I need all my processor power for, say, recompressing video or 3D rendering...

It all sounds very important and impressive.
As I'm pretty much online all the time anyway, they seem to go through smoothly. And if I leave the pc on all the time crunching, it connects itself and then disconnects when the unit is sent.
I still haven't replaced my fan, so I don't leave it on all the time anymore. The groaning gets on my nerves.
No jokes about me being used to groaning please.

It's no joke you being used to groaning Mina
My PC is not a happy bunny at the mo, but don't have time to sort it. Not sure what's wrong anyway, so....
As longas it crunches away fro me,and allows me access to the 'net and emails I'm happy.
Q. Anyone fancy an Xmas meet in Glasgow on 24th Nov, since London ain't going to be until January now?
Just trying to gauge interest. If it's positive, then I'll get it set up.
