Um, I'm new (as of, yesterday, I think?!?), but I was wondering (and by the look of your very 'know what I'm doing' my space), as you seem to know what you're doing, why your name and mine on the 'who's online' link are both in blue and others are in kind of green gone wrong colour?.
Anyway, I like the flying tea cup...

Babel17 Posted May 17, 2001
Hello
Glad you found your way to my space, and you are more than welcome here anytime I assume you came here by clicking on my name in the greeeting I left on your space yesterday?
Anyway, to your question, which is quite simple to answer, but for some reason, doesn't actually appear on the Welcome info anywhere.
A touch of history for you to start with. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin...
Long ago, when the site was young there was only one way to view pages, that was in a lovely calming blue style, now known as Classic Goo, due to the gooeyness of the navigation bars. All text appeared in a sort of very pale orange, and when you clicked on a link, it changed to a deep rich orange. This way you knew you had visited a link, and your PC remembered this, as long as you didn't clear down any cookies or temp internet files, and the world was good.
Then like the ill wind that blows, a change came along and a new skin was born (what youare currently in, as all new accounts start off in this as it is more server friendly, and quicker to load, though rather offputing and corporate-like) and thus the links were pale green turning to blue. What you see is the after effects of having visited my page. Should you click on another name in the 'Online' window, you will see it change to dark blue. Hope this answers your question and sorry for the long dialog
Should you like to see your page (or mine for that matter, as I intend it to be seen) it is quite simple. in your address bar, just add a '?skin=classic' to the end of it and hit enter.
For example:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U14977?skin=classic
is my page in Classic Goo, and this is yours:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U175481?skin=classic
Should you wish to change to goo, then click on the 'Preferences' button on your page, and change the SKIN attribute via the drop down box.
Feel free to drop by anytime for a natter or a cup of tea.
So where about in Scotland are you, if you don't mind me asking?
all weather systems welcome!
Researcher janemaggie Posted May 17, 2001
I am in Edinburgh (( don't mind you asking - get ready for a big rant...), home of rain and many hills. Hills, where you can see the sun/rain/sleet/cloud/snow/rain(might have mentioned that one before...)haar(my particular favourite - it's a long story, unless you've been here...) weather from the top of any of these. And it's a funny city because standing on the top of any of our loverly hills you can see all these weather things hanging around the top of other hills. A city where you look out your window in the morning and see sun, so dress accordingly - nothing, only to discover that it's minus 7.
But I've been here for 21 years and love it for all that it is (politicians aside, these days...), so I'm not planning to leave. Where are you (sorry about the rant...)?
all weather systems welcome!
Babel17 Posted May 17, 2001
LOL. Would you believe me if I said I am in Edinburgh? Honest to god!
Currently working nightshift. What of you? Studying late or what?
Worry not on the rant front, we all do it from time to time

Researcher janemaggie Posted May 17, 2001
I do believe you (if you're called Camilla, I know your computer is not working so stop freaking me out...!)
Nightshift where? I am supposed to be studying but it's not working. Hence the all night on the internet type thing...

Babel17 Posted May 17, 2001
LOL, I've been called many things, but Camilla isn't one of them.
Sighthill to be precise. A certain 300yr+ financial institute who is in talks over a merger with another FI. IT section. So there you go!

It's been ages since you last talked to me but I'm again confused and wondering if you had any idea what was going on? I went to the help page but didn't feel particularly helped...
I had a journal. And people had replied. But when I clicked on a conversation it had been removed and when I went back to my journal space it had disapeared all together. So there wasn't even anything that people might have replied to.
I don't understand how I lost not only my journal entry but all the conversations linked to it?
And I'm sorry to bother you but I couldn't find a relevant help page.

Hi maggie.
Indeed it has been ages. But not to worry, you are here now
Hmm. This is a starnge one. It looks indeed as if you have no journal entries at all. The servers have been playing up a bit recently, from what i can gather and things aren't quite right.
Pages normally in Classic Goo are turning into Alabaster at the drop of a hat. Somebody got their name changed for no reason and lots of other weird goings on. (probably doesn't make any sense to you, but basically means things are going screwey!)
I honestly don't know off the top of my head about this. Um Hold on...
*dives over to the 'Everything' section of the guide and has a rot around*
Ok. Try this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A388361
This is the url of the 'Bug Report' section. I think you should post a message about your problem there. Jim Lynn is very good at getting back to you as he takes these things very seriously. Hope this helps.
So how are you? What have you been up to? How did your exams go?
Are you up for meeting a bunch of h2g2 folks around xmas time, probably here in Edinburgh?

Researcher janemaggie Posted Aug 21, 2001
Yeah, that sounds good . Exams didn't go well, but I've only got one resit so that's not too bad . Other than that, I'm online at the moment looking for a petrol tank for my parents old wreck of a car (the old tank is cracked, it's really safe, honest...).
Thanks for the bug report advice, I'll go and do that now and let you know.

That would be really good but I failed to notice a venue? Am I being really blind? If there wasn't a venue may I suggest the Pear Tree beer garden (if the weather's nice????). Just a thought...

S'ok I do it all the time.
Check the thread again, cos we have reached a decision.
Waverly Station bar at 7pm, Cafe Royal bar at 7.30 pm onwards.
I'd give you my mobile number but my post got moderated last time.
We should be in the Cafe Royal for a good couple of hours. If it's too busy we'll move on. Need to stay relatively close to the stations so people don't have too far to stagger for trains etc.
If you get this this morning, or before mid afternoon can you send an email to [email protected], and I'll send my mobile number to you.
I'll wear my h2g2 t-shirt so you can spot me
Hope to see you there!
