Tideland

Well, 52 minutes and 46 seconds of it. I can't get a handle on this one. I feel like it's probably worth seeing all the way through but I'm just not ready for it right now, or at least not in the right frame of mind tonight. It's happened before with books - took me three or four attempts before I got all the way through Catch 22. There were others like that too.

I'm glad you're not just dismissing it off-hand.

It is disturbing to watch the first time... well, every time probably, but it is worth it.

Not to spoil it if you haven't gotten to this scene yet, but I just love that at one point I feel bad for a Barbie doll head... poor thing. smiley - laugh

That little girl playing the lead role is just amazing.

I must be honest, after I posted that I skipped forward through parts of the film, right up to the end. I doubt I'll ever watch it all the way through, but I can't see what everyone got so bent out of shape about. It's weird, but not that weird.

Let me rephrase that:

It's weird. Far too weird to be anything more than fantasy, so why would you get bent out of shape about it?

I think it's indicative of our cultural sensitivity to perceived child abuse/endangerment. We've been conditioned by the media to (over?)react.

Terrible things happen all around that little girl, but in her world, nothing really bad happens. When you watch the film from her point of view, it's a happy adventure.

I find it a grand adventure as a viewer. The story (and Terry Gilliam) tries to polarize your emotional reactions using your own preconceptions against you.

It was the most original film I've seen in a very long time. It was not afraid to alienate some audiences. Some of us though were well rewarded.

Tender Mercies

That's a very nice film, but it seems to be heading somewhere that it never quite reaches. I constantly felt myself waiting for something to happen... and it never did. I kinda like it in that respect because everything was so downplayed and understated, just like real life really, but movies aren't supposed to be like real life. That's why we have the phrase 'It was just like in the movies'. It's gratifying to see that it won a couple of Oscars, for all of that.

Yeah. It might be one of those things you have to read the book to find out.

I'm sure you don't know in the book either ~ mind you it is 40 years since I read it.

I really don't see the appeal of La Jolie. I don't find her particularly attractive or sexy, and her acting is like that of Cary Grant or Jimmy Cagney. Cary Grant was best known for playing Cary Grant no matter what film he was in.

I have to share this.

I cannot stand the films of Roland Emmerich. He makes Michael Bay seem reserved.

Coming soon: Roland Emmerich does Disaster Porn with 2012.

Share and Enjoy.
