McKay The Disorganised

Billy Liar is on at our local theatre next month (satge play)

The Illusionist - picked up from the bargain bucket for £2.00 ~ very good I thought. Edward Norton as the lead character really carried the role. Very erotic sex scene, which shows nothing, but suggests a lot. I'd never heard of this film, but well worth a watch.

Mona Lisa

Bob Hoskins and Michael Caine should have done more films together.

Those scenes around King's Cross are completely unbelievable. I remember thinking that back in the 80s when I knew that area well... and not for that reason. Yeah, it was a red light district, but nowhere near as 'Escape From New York' as that.

Zoë Nathenson is utterly unrecognisable from her role in Those Glory Glory Days, even though there's only three years between the two films.

Djomeh (Austin Film Society)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259981/
A film with almost no plot and yet it's still riveting. Djomeh is an Afghan refugee working in Iran. He's very philosophical for a 20 year-old. He takes a shine to a girl who works in the nearby village but it's doomed to failure partly because of religion and partly because of his status as 'not one of us'. He spends half the film cycling to and from the village, spending far too much money in the shop just to see the girl, and the other half riding in a truck (which is going to and from the village) with the man who employs him and explaining his view of life. The camerawork and the locations are fantastic. Breathtaking scenery.

Heat and Dust

A Merchant Ivory film about. That pretty much sums it up. Julie Christie again - pure coincidence, I assure you smiley - blush She's aged very well I must say.

I really have to rent Mr and Mrs Bridge - I've never seen that one at the flicks or at home.

Impressive list of cast members, lots of familiar names in that one.

Why doesn't IMDb have a pic of Freddie Jones?... did he not show up for picture day?

What a profoundly, depressingly awful film. And yet it's a Dick Lester film and Dick Lester is one of my favourite directors. I can hardly think of a Dick Lester film I don't hold in the highest regard - The Running Jumping and Standing Still Film, The Mouse on the Moon, A Hard Day's Night, The Knack... and How to Get It, Help!, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, How I Won the War, The Bed Sitting Room, The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers, The Return of the Musketeers. Some of those are amongst my favourite films of all time. I'd never seen this one so I thought I give it a go, but despite the fact that he made this between two of what I consider his best films - How I Won the War and The Bed Sitting Room, well... I don't quite know what happened with this one. It just doesn't work for me. Not even with Janis Joplin.

Or Julie Christie smiley - tongueout

Drat!

I'm currently rewatching "Ladies and Gentlemen: The Fabulous Stains"

I haven't watched this film since I was a kid in the early eighties on cable TV.

WOW!

I'm not saying this is a great movie, but it is fun. It definitely falls well shy of the mark musically as a story. It has some great musicians in it, but it doesn't capture what the music was at the end of the seventies as much as it pretends to.

However it did inspire a lot of the music that followed, that's obvious.

But back to how I'm seeing it now....

When I first saw it, I knew none of the actors... no one did.

But now, they all look so young... They all WERE SO YOUNG.

Dianne Lane(15), Laura Dern(12), Ray Winstone (22?), Liz Daily(18)...

The only person in the film that looked the same age to me was Fee Waybill of the Tubes... and that's only because the last time I saw him was in the video "Talk to You Later" about four years after that... he didn't age only because his career basically ended in that decade.

There was a lot of cheese in this flick but I am glad I rewatched it... It definitely captures that age... the end of the seventies.

You might want to Netflick Scum - the BBC version, not the movie release - for an even younger Ray Winstone, and Phil Daniels. It's not an easy film to watch though, you should be aware of that.

Did so... and I get the pop up that lists "Movies most like Scum - BBC version"

Aguirre:The Wrath of God
Fitzcarraldo
Barry Lyndon
Once Were Warriors
Buster Keaton: The General
Mean Streets
400 Blows
Scum
Dead Ringers
Made in Britain

smiley - laugh

Most of those stretch any idea of similarity but The General? seriously?

This one might interest you http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Meantime/750305?trkid=222336&lnkctr=srchrd-sr&strkid=27460003_0_0 but it's Mike Leigh and therefore very, very hard going. Worth it though for one of Gary Oldman's earliest roles, and especially for Tim Roth. Phil Daniels is in this one too.

Meantime is apparently a lot like Solaris (original), Tokyo Story and guess what else...

The Navigator and Steamboat Bill, Jr. both staring, you got it... Buster Keaton.

I think this has something to do with recently watching some Harold Lloyd films and nothing to do with any perceived similarities.

Post 697

It's about as depressing as Solaris, and as impenetrable. I guess I can see a link with Buster Keaton's lugubrious face...

I enjoyed his all too brief appearance in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Not quite as brief as the Three Stooges mind you.

Hobson's Choice smiley - biggrin

My favourite David Lean film - more than Bridge on the River Kwai, more than Ryan's Daughter, more than Lawrence of Arabia, and my favourite Charles Laughton film - more than Mutiny on the Bounty, more than The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Possibly my favourite John Mills film, although both Mr Polly, The Family Way and The Wrong Box are all close contenders.

For some reason I found it very uncomfortable to watch parts of this film, this time round. I'm not sure why - that never happened before with this movie.
