Today could hardly be more different... unless it was snowing. It's been raining for the last three or so hours, heavily at times, but without thunder. I won't post any numbers yet because it's raining unevenly across town and the two NWS stations have been showing very different totals so far. But it will be considerable

Not just considerable but a new record, leastways at the airport, which got 2.49". Camp Mabry had 1.62". It was the kind of rain that comes straight down without being inconvenienced by the wind, the kind of rain that's so nice and relaxing to listen to with the windows open

The website I use for most of the statistics I put in these posts has been redesigned and, naturally, they've gone for form over function So I think I can still use it but I might have to find another. The biggest change is that the duty forecaster's description of what's going on with the weather has been taken off the main weather page and put into the "weather blog" And when you get to the weather blog page you haven't even arrived at the text - you have to find the link to it. Maybe they're just looking for more individual page views, I don't know. Seems daft to me. The weather home page is where you'd want to see that... isn't it

A mere 21 days of scorchio. Tell that to kids these days, they wouldn't believe you. Did we go above 42 this year? I can't remember.

I don't think we broke 100° at all this year. Houston might have just barely done so one or two days. We had heat indexes well into triple digits quite often, but not actual temps.

When I left work yesterday, a little after 6pm, it was raining pretty heavily. By the time I got halfway home the roads were bone dry. That's reflected again in the numbers - the airport got 0.75" while Mabry only got 0.06". And it looks like I'm going to need my brolly this morning.

If I recall correctly, Dad said we got 0.31" thursday night. That was the only rain we got last month, the first since Harvey.

There was a stunning sunrise yesterday morning. Unfortunately it was most stunning while I was on the bus so I couldn't get a picture of it, and sunrises don't last as long here as they do further north. I miss those long twilights, sitting outside a pub in the summer.

There was plenty of thunder around yesterday afternoon for a while but I saw no flashes of lightning. And the airport outdid Mabry in the rain totals again, by 0.3".

Had a really spectacular thunderstorm roll through as I was leaving for work this morning. I was very tempted to stay in bed and listen to it rain.

But I got up, checked the radar, and left the house just as it started raining, and outran the storm before I got to work.

Other than that, typical fall in the Lou: hot, muggy, cool, rainy, foggy, etc.

I heard on the radio yesterday that this year would have been the hottest ever in Austin if not for Harvey. I'd provide a link but KUT doesn't seem to put most of the local interest stories it broadcasts during Morning Edition or All Things Considered on its website.

This time tomorrow it's going to be downright chilly. I'm already planning an itinerary of baking and roasting
