The minimum here in Austin on Saturday night was 37/2.8 - definitely colder than anything since probably last March, and probably colder than anything while I was in Devon. But by the time I left for work at 8.50am on Sunday morning it was 47/8.3 with clear skies and not a breath of wind, which is why it didn't feel cold in the glorious sunshine. I made one nod to the weather - I put a hat on my bald bonce, and wondered why so many others were bundled up like the kid from Christmas Story http://kimandjason.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/autographed-randy_snowsuit.jpg
I'm surprised to find that we only got up to 68/20 on Sunday - it felt warmer. Must have been the lack of wind again. Last night was only a degree warmer than Saturday night but today we should be in the mid 70s today and for the rest of the week (with warmer nights), until another cold front on Friday night.

Ah, yes... The tendency of Texans to over-dress for moderately cold weather is a well established phenomenon. There are two theories. The one most often cited, especially by Yankee carpetbaggers, is that Texans just can't handle the cold weather. While there may be some validity to that, here along the Gulf Coast there is the extenuating aspect of the humidity that makes it feel MUCH colder in moderately cool temperatures. However, I posit the second theory as to the over-bundling of Texans.
We only get a few weeks of cold weather per year and we take every opportunity to wear our nice winter coats that we spend so much for yet so rarely have the chance to wear. It's not necessarily that we NEED to bundle up when the temperatures drop into the 40's but that we CAN.

It feels considerably warmer this morning than the past four or five mornings, and in fact it is - we only went down to 53 last night, as opposed to 46 the night before and 45 the night before that, and it's already warmer at 8am (57F/14C) today than it's likely to be all day tomorrow (55/12.8) as we get another polar cold front this evening.

It was a bit foggy this morning, very low 50's.

Every time I hear on the radio that it's a foggy morning I never see any around Fort Gosho. Must be mostly down by the river I guess.

As of yesterday, hurricane season is finally over. Does this mean we no longer have to watch the tropics? Yea, this year we can probably safely ignore them for another 6 months, but the 2005 season lasted so long they ran out of names and had to start using the Greek alphabet. I think they were still naming storms as late as early February, 2006.

Last year was a bit special, wasn't it. This year, so far, we're only up to Paloma.

We made 80F/26.7C today. Not bad for the first week of December
It's a lot colder now, four or five hours later. A cold front has passed over us and we'll be down into the 30s F tonight, possibly freezing on Thursday night Right now it's 54/12.2 and there's a raw wind blowing. It's even making waves on the swimming pool

Texas weather is about to do it again. Three seasons in one week
Today is going to be a very pleasant 74/23.3, although there'll be a lot of cloud. A very warm 63/17.2 tonight, and 75/23.9 on Tuesday... until a strong cold front passes by dropping temperatures by up to 30F. Tuesday night is forecast to be 35/1.7, Wednesday 56/13.3, and Wednesday night could well be a few degrees below freezing before it warms up again to the low to mid 70s over the weekend.

Something's happening outside. I think it's hail. We might get sleet and snow tonight. I should probably bring my cacti in.

It's snowing
We got up to 81F this afternoon, some time between 1pm and 2pm. Since then the temperature has dropped by nearly 50F to 34, and it'll almost certainly go lower. From spring to winter in less than 12 hours.
Ya gotta love Texas weather

Riding the bike home at dusk last night everything looked fine... until I looked to the Northeast. Absolutely pitch black clouds between me and home. OK, I head towards the darkness hoping there's no rain in it. I'd already gotten soaked at lunch and once a day is enough for me. I cross a bridge right at the edge of these ominous black clouds forming a wall in front of me and the wind picks up and the temperature drops. It must have been 20 degrees colder in the span of a quarter mile. The wind was buffeting me and the roads were still wet from earlier rains. Not the greatest of riding conditions especially surrounded by ignorant Texas drivers.
But that distinct cold front line was impressive. It actually beat me home. When I pulled out from work I could see across the lake where it was clear about half way to the house, but by the time I got there it was black all the way home.

I'll make no comments today about Texans wrapping themselves up like Randy from Christmas Story - it's justified!

Bloody hell it's cold out there This time yesterday we were still at 71/20, coming down from a high of 79. You can tell when the cold front came through - some time between 02.51 and 03.51 when the temperature dropped from from 67 to 42, and it's been dropping all day long, down to the current temperature of barely above freezing with a biting raw wind.
