'Avoir tort' means to be wrong. I think you can use it like that. Or you can say 'j'ai fait une faute' - I made a mistake. Or 'je me suis trompé', that's right.

'J'ai cru qu'il y avait un requin, mais il parait que j'avais tort' = "I thought there was a shark but it appears that I was wrong'.
