I am Medusa the Golden Dragon
When I was a little girl my parents pretty well determined my lot in life - to have my feet firmly planted in space - by joining a Science Fiction Book Club. My friends had Anne of Green Gables and Nancy Drew - I had Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke and (much later) Anne McCaffrey. After reading DragonRiders I knew I had found my career path. I would grow up to be a tall, slim, blonde, beautiful warrior heroine riding a golden dragon and slaying the enemy that threatened our people and there would be rejoicing throughout the land!!... I'm still waiting to be beamed up to Pern...it shouldn't be too much longer...In order to provide some balance and reality in my reading material my parents also bought books on Greek and Roman mythology. At a rummage sale I obtained a book called A Wonder Book & Tanglewood Tales, a sort of kids mythology primer, printed in 1937. I was hooked. While waiting for my mission as a DragonRider I would grow up to be a tall, slim, blonde, beautiful Greek heroine in a long, flowing, white dress, waiting on the shores of the island kingdom for my hero to return from slaying some horrible monster that threatened our people and there would be rejoicing throughout the land!!...
AND THEN CAME THE REALITY CHECK!!
There was a tiny detail I had overlooked - my real life. Born in England with a Welsh/Irish background and a love of potatoes, the chances of my ever being tall, slim, blonde and Greek were zero. Worse yet, thanks to a head of uncontrollable snaky red hair, the only one I resembled in the whole book was Medusa. :-( And I lived in Toronto where there were hardly any dragons and absolutely no men who looked heroic enough to slay horrible monsters.
It was official - I was a Geek, not a Greek!! So now, many years later, I live and work in Canada and lead a seemingly normal life...but one of these days the call will come to take up my position as a DragonRider on Pern and I'll be off! Won't there be some talk around the water cooler at work when THAT happens!!???
In the meantime maybe I'll book a vacation to Greece... :-)
