Yes, the console is great... however, I find it annoying to read the man pages in it. So I read man pages using Konqueror. I am a good little geekette, and leave a console window open all the time, for easy and quick access when I want to do something. ^_^

However, I'm also a geekette who's still learning, and like my GUIs. ^_^ I'm still relatively new to the linux thing. I installed like beginning of Mayish last year, so I've only been using linux for like 7 months. But I'm very happy with it, and getting used to doing more and more from the console. smiley - smiley

I've gotta admit, that despite using it for about three years now, I have never gotten used to Linux.

However, I'm nearly positive that the Linux that I have is a dinosaur compared to whatever must exist now.

"I am a good little geekette, and leave a console window open all the time" ... erm, I boot straigt in to console, only starting X if I need to use a programe that runs only under a GUI.

...only running X if you have something that must use a GUI? That's just a touch too hard core for me.

I like linux, nice and solid, and I'm learning how to make it my friend the more I use it, but I do a lot of things that I'm more comfortable using GUIs for. Like instant messaging, web browsing, stuff like that.

To each their own, I suppose. Enjoy your hardcore X free experience. ^_^

I boot into the console though, mostly so because I was running cooker for a while, and sometimes X wouldn't behave itself, so I had to see what the problem was when I started it. *shrugs* It works for me.

Not "hardcore" just old fashioned smiley - winkeye

I think most people under value the power of console.
I use Pine for electronic mail.
I do a lot of my web browsing using Elinks (a text only tabbed browser – very good for this site), I'm also told that Links2 will do graphical browsing in console but I have never tried it (not even sure if it is ported to NetBSD).
I can IM from console using Centericq (which despite it's name can connect to all the major networks).
Midnight Commander is one of the finest File Managers I know of and Vim is about as good as text editing gets once you have configured it right (nice colour scheme, spell checking etc).

Couple of important point to remember with console mode:
You are actually running several virtual terminals (I think the default for Linux is 6) you can switch between these in Linux (I think) using either Alt+F1 to Alt+F6 or Ctrl+Alt+F1 to Ctrl+Alt+F6 (sorry I'm a BSD user so cannot be to specific about Linux), you could even run X in one or more of these while running console mode progs in others. The GNU Screen prog also gives simple windowing for console mode progs.

Do Not get me wrong I'm not anti GUI, if for example I'm writing something that is going to printed I'll boot up X and use LyX, playing with pictures GIMP, web-sites where the pictures are important FireFox and so on. On the subject of X is everyone still using big recourse hungry desktop environments like KDE or Gnome, (OK I've got Gnome & Xfce installed but..) why not become real "hardcore" and give something like Ratpoisen a try smiley - huh

Me, I always prefered WindowMaker for a window manager on top of X (hell I even prefered openwindows to CDE when I used to use sun workstations). Then again I would normally have a load of console windows open and do most of the work in those connecting to the servers and such that way and having management tools that ran in a console screen sitting in the corner of the desktop where I could keep an eye on it.

Sea, be sure to check out the Linux on Lapdogs page at http://www.linux-laptop.net/

Well, I'm currently using Enlightenment, but I think I'm going to ditch it. The menus seem a little buggy, and I donno, I've kinda adjusted to it, but not really. A friend of mine uses Fluxbox, and I think I'm going to give that a go next. As comfortable as I was in KDE, I think it'll be nice to give something a try that's not so windows like. Though I do have a friend who's fairly knowledgable and such, but he's a Gnome user. *shrugs*

I am aware of being able to get to those virtual terminals. I've had to use them on occasion when x wasn't playing nice (back in the cooker days, I recently downgraded to a stable release of mandrake, and my computer's been even happier since), but really, I'm still too new to the linux thing to go heavily to the console. At least I'm not afraid of it, like a lot of newbies are. ^_^

I forget what I use. Something boring. Is "Gnome 2.0" something that I might be using? That name's in my mind.

Or maybe it's just "Common Desktop Environment", or something similarly lame.

Like I said, I've not used Linux's finest yet. Even though I plan to.

Pine? I've used pine! It used to be the only way to check my university e-mail. The fiance finds it quite exciting when I use it. Makes me look really smart. smiley - rofl

I love Pine, I think it is the best electronic mail client ever but the hard core *nix crowd would consider us wusses for not using mutt or elm but then again the kamikaze squad would consider elm & mutt users wusses for not using nail or something smiley - erm

I use mutt on one system I have an accnt on. I had to ask my friend to change my default editor from vi to something else, however.
I hate vi.

wuss... vi/vim is the best if you can make the the tiny bit of effort to learn it's commands smiley - erm

I've learned it's commands and I feel that there are far more intuitive editors out there. And hold off on calling someone a wuss who does not agree with you. Ettiquite still has a place in society.

Vi/Vim is a powerful, elegant & highly configurable solution to text editing. I use Vi/Vim as my default text/code editor (even with Pine and on win32 systems) smiley - nahnah
