h2g2 certainly does look different through linux.
Yes, that's right, LINUX!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
I'm interviewing this version of linux (it boots from CD) to see if I want to install it on my laptop, which is not functioning properly anymore, and didn't even after I formatted the hard drive and re-installed WinXP, so now I figure I've got nothing to lose and can play around with fun stuff.
Anyone else know anything about linux? I'm using slax.

I'm totally a Mandrake lover here. ^_^ My pretty purple baby computer is very happily running 10.1 official of Mandrake, after cooker was driving me crazy due to my apparently ability to bring out every flaw in it. My friend who helped me get started never had a problem with it. Bah, cooker's the unstable version for a reason.
At any rate, I wish you luck with your linux explorations. It's fun, and it's nice to have an OS that doesn't crash on you all the time, or require you to restart your computer. ^_^
If you decide to give Mandrake a go, give me a yell (do you still have my instant messanger contacts? I may have changed them since we last talked outside of h2g2) and I'll be glad to give you guidance and/or tips. ^_^ Otherwise, best of luck with whatever distro you decide on.

sea, post a little something in the computer lab attached to Lil's. dave and phil are both *nix geeks. I assume you are using the knoppix cd? That is a rather good cd boot distro.

Linux ... hmmm well it's half a step in the right direction but one day the world will see the light and switch to using BSD's

Right direction? Nah. You want more hardware-based stuff. Like an Amiga.

Slackware is where it's at. Of course, comments like that could start a holy war, so maybe I should be more careful about making them...

"You want more hardware-based stuff. Like an Amiga"
but you still have question of which O/S, I know NetBSD is available for the Amiga http://www.uk.netbsd.org/Ports/amiga/
Incidentally a general purpose NetBSD 2.0 based live CD that may be of interest, booting into KDE and offering various desktop and networking programs is available from ftp://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/iso/2.0/i386live.iso (similar to the Linux one that is being used)

Oh no, the trick to being a *nix geek(ette) is you may not know what you're doing, but you're willing to tell everyone that you do using all sorts of fancy words that confuse those who haven't learned how to pretend yet.
Well, at least, that's the best I can figure. Really, your best friends are help lists (I've got at least one I can share with you, two if you give Mandrake a try), and google. Oh, and the man pages. The man pages are your super special absolute best friend. I liked 'em a lot better once I freed them from the console window, and was able to pull 'em up using Konqueror.

HappyDude Posted Jan 23, 2005
You are right, man pages are good but why so down on console? I like console, I spend most of my time in console mode, I browse hootoo from console (thanks to "Elinks" a fantastic text only browser) don't be so hard on console Saturn Girl.
That apart most versions of Linux & BSD have very active mailing list & these are really where ya learn how to work *nix O/S's, so along wiv the man (manual) pages they do become very close to ones heart

Sea, this is the part of the story where you've walked further than you ever have before, but before the Ring Wraith starts chasing you.

Well I guess I'm buggered, then. S'okay. I'll be dead before they find me.
