Post Feature Idea - My Favourites
Icy North Started conversation Feb 26, 2009
Here's an idea for a Post series - let me know if you think it's a goer, or indeed if it should be strangled at birth:
***
"My Favourites"
Each month Icy North (or someone else) interviews a member of the h2g2 Community to find out what's on their Browser Favourites list, and why.
***
Our Favourites list can be quite personal. I believe you can learn a lot about someone from the websites they frequently access. Are they tidily arranged into folders? Are there lots of old broken links that need tidying up? Are there stories behind any of them?
So, would you be prepared to open up your links to scrutiny? (Of course you needn't mention any that are too embarrassing)
Let me know what you think!

I had a quick look at my favourites list, and I think everybody would be bored to death by them, but if you'd be short of volunteers, I could tell you mine.

I'm sure it might not be boring to everyone
I'd suggest one practical way to do it would be this:
Interviewee exports their favourites list into a file
(In Internet Explorer 6, for example, this is File - Import and Export - Next - Export Favorites - Next - (Top level folder should be selected by default) - Next - Export to a File or Address - (choose filename) - Next - Finish)
Interviewee edits the file (it's html) and removes anything they really don't want to discuss.
Interviewee e-mails it to me (or alternatively to the Post Team, who can forward it to me).
I draw up a list of relevant questions and mail them to the interviewee.
The interviewee replies to me.
I write the article.

You could do it like that, but then you don't have the chance, as an interviewer, of following up on a particular answer. Psycorp always did My Inquisitor as a back-and-forth email interview, but that relies on interviewer and interviewee being available regularly over the course of a few days.

Yes, it could be more iterative than that if necessary. I'd rather the focus was on the interviewee talking about their Favourites rather than on an inquisitive interviewer looking for something shocking.
There's no reason it has to be me doing the interviewing, of course. Maybe people would prefer someone else to.

I'm intrigued now - I demand an article on Skanky's bookmarks!

Ok, I demand an article on Skanky's beermats!

Why don't you ask him about them?
I guess you'll have to wait a bit for Skanky's list of bookmarks, he'll be on a different continent for a fortnight or so.

I'd play, but I have nothing interesting. There are many sites I visit frequently that aren't in my bookmarks. I rely on Firefox offering suggestions from my history as I type into the address bar.
Still, you can give me a shout if you're interested.

No offence to Rich, but would'nt it be nice to see an iterview type thing with someone less well known on this site?
There are always complaints about not enough people getting involved in the post and writing etc, well heres a chance for you to approach someone less high profiled. I see people on the online list day after day, they post in places like *Ask* and other such forums, maybe they would like the chance to share something in an article type way.
Just a thought.
