I'm watching Jamie Oliver self promoting on C4. He just walked into a church. There are children in the church celebrating 'Easter'. That makes me angry.

As an adult you are entitled to your beliefs. Please don't saddle your children with the same nonsense.

Hmm, that's tricky. When my oldest son went o kindcergarden, the only kindergarden he could get a place in was the protestantic one. They got to hear the story about Christ's crucification and they there were several occasions when they went to church to celebrate. I didn't really like that, but then again, it's part of our culture, and I thought it wouldn't harm my son to hear something about it. Don't underestimate children, when he was in school and had the right to choose whether or not he wanted to have religion classes, he decided against it, saying two years in kindergarden where sufficient. My small son was in the municipal kindergarden, no religion there, but he loved the rel. classes at school, and decided to be christened ( at the age of 13) and confirmed at the age of 14 ho-humm

RJR - JO wsn't spuoting any claptrap, he just seemed to know that a lot of the community movers and shakers would have taken their poor sprogs there. He was right.

Despite my mention of his self publiscising at least he's doing the right thing, and possibly for the right reasons, unlike certain religious types...

B'El - he decided to be christened. My heart dies a little with every child that believes. Even if kids end up without a belief they've still spent a lot of their childhood listening to religious teachings that could have been spent learning about morality, science, language...

The problem for me is that religious belief is accepted as normal and doesn't seem to be challenged in schools, so kids are allowed to believe.

Messier cans have indeed loosed themselves upon the world!

My opinion is that religion needs to be taught. Your kids have to go to school to be taught - they have little choice (though with truancy levels abound, you'd beg to differ). You COULD argue that the parents are acting as mentors and conduits of spiritual enlightenment. OK, OK I said you COULD!

In much the same way that parents go crazy about sex education in school, I feel the same - to as great a degree - should be levied at Religious Education. My Catholic school (my faith, although I've never been confirmed and have only gone to Catholic churches for deaths, baby-related thingies and to visit the architecture - oh, and I like blokes) taught one hour's worth of each of the following faiths: Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Muslim/Islam. Strangely, or perhaps not, we never discussed the C of E because my faith is the one true faith (again, can/worms) so I never learnt about other Christian religious beliefs - never mind the fact they're fundamentally similar.

The thing is, though, that you have to expect that if kids aren't taken to church they won't know about the possibility of liking religion. The OTHER thing is, though, if they end up hating it, was it worth it?

I didn't know I "liked" being gay until I practised it. I don't think people are ever BORN their faith - it's all learned. Just like "being a man" or reading or being good with mathematics. Nobody taught me how to be gay - that's another thread, though.

To be honest, I've never been entirely sure about his motivation to be christened and confirmed, but then i couldn't forbid it, could I ? *My* family are atheists, I'm not even a member of the church, neither are my parents or siblings. Hubby's family is the religious one, and if you had seen my sons, yo'd just know why that fits so well with my eldest boy coming after me, and the youngest after his dad smiley - laugh

I hope it's a turkey twizzler that's been blessed by God's representative on Earth, otherwise you'll spenfd eternity in the damnationj that comes of chewing the Devil's tizzler.

(and amongst that lot is why i don't think kids should be let amnywhere near religion)

Well, it looks like Mr. Oliver is using the time honored public display of religion. If his legendary self-promotion is still as sharp as ever, this is just another logical step in keeping his face in the public. Since organic foods served him well for a bit, maybe its time for a little spirituality along with the free range chicken. Food for thought and for the soul.

School is NOT the place for religion. If we made it illegal to expose people to religion until they were 18, religion would be dead within a couple of geerations.

Incidentally, was St Jamie doing something about the awful dry biscuits and stale wine? Replace them with hobnobs and Rioja and I might go visit smiley - biggrin

I was about to stand up for r O but the fact is that he chose to visit kids whose parents had taken them to a church rather than kids whose parents had taken them to a rock concert/theme park etc. Sp yeah, maybe he is playing up to the deific fantasists. The fact that it might work is the *really* worrying bit.
