By 'Saxon' I was assuming you meant something Old English... smiley - rofl

You can say a friend's friend's uncle. Or the uncle of a friend-of-a-friend. smiley - snork

Or my grandfather's grandfather's grandfather, who fought in the American Revolution...

The keyed trumpet came around 1818, but music for "trumpet" existed for thousands of years before that.

I'm guess in that to be a great trumpet player in those early days, you needed to be able to carry a tune, and have dexterous lips and a good ear. Maybe things are not much different now, come to think of it.

Oh, CC, you mentioned the word 'Americana'. Sure, it means 'things associated with the culture and history of America, especially the United States.' According to Google. smiley - laugh

Over in Peer Review, Bluebottle told me the other day that somebody was using it to mean country music, and then dividing it into 'Americana' and 'Canadiana', which I thought was pretty funny.

I listened to less than a minute of a 'song' about a train. smiley - yawn

My conclusion is that's it's would sound much better with a banjo and a fiddle.

I realise the distortion is the point for fans...smiley - rofl But listen to this version of '500 Miles' and see why I say everything goes better with bluegrass:

It must have been a monumental effort. I see that it took five composers to put it together. smiley - rofl

It might be improved by the addition of real rock music:

For me "500 miles" will always be this Peter Paul and Mary standard:

(Not the best recording, but I like the ambience.

Ah, news of the trumpet

Splendid! About the origins of the trumpet! And what it takes to play one. I've never tried it myself. Not so good for apartment living. No! No! say the neighbours, as the cauliflower flies ...

smiley - flan Are flying flans related to the cauliflower? smiley - flan

And the friend's friend's uncle exists after all. I'm please about this. Although now we know he wasn't D.B. because FWR knows all .. and will tell me the story, he will he will he will. Oh, he's busy on nightshift. OK.

Just another morning on Planet h2g2 smiley - rofl

Actually, thinking of the trumpet, there was this amazing documentary about Miles Davis, on TV the other night. What an extraordinary guy ..

I think the BBC are showing really good documentaries this year, to cheer us all up because of lockdown.

Oh, wait!!! Heavens! I'll write a special posting ...

Thanksgiving greetings to all our h2g2 friends from the USA!!!!

smiley - kiss

A strange year, indeed. Perhaps the heart of the celebration can somehow embrace all the 2020 emotions.

Not quite sure if I expressed that right, but it was well meant.

Christmas is going to be the same, I think. Kind of a different type greeting.

How deep is the pain?
Do I dare to forgive?
Should I dance in the rain?

Is there life after Star Trek?
Does Earth make us smile?

I found the last two lines of your poem striking, even profound. I couldn't resist the temptation to continue it. smiley - smiley

Do you dance with the sunbeams,
or work through pain with a smile?

Sunbeams are kind of hard to dance with.

We've had lots of cloudy days here lately. Before they started, the sun shone right through the window next to my computer, and the glare made it hard to see my computer monitor.

Now it's so dark at times, I feel sad in the evening.

I wouldn'
t mind having a sunbeam to dance with now, if I could figure out how.

I love it, mvp! Your lines have a subtle twist to them, look at them one way then look again! the light has changed ..

Not sure quite what I mean by that .. I'm trying to express a way of seeing ...

I must check in with Danielle. I got very haunted by her situation when Mister D profiled a chapter in the Post a couple of weeks ago. Great writing. Tension was building ...

smiley - coffee

I haven't forgotten about the writers travelling through Holes in History. I decided to wait till December, so I could read all the endings first. heheh. What??? Well, you have to know what happened, before you find out how you got there. This is how I weakly defend my tendency to read the end of books first. smiley - rofl. My niece, who loves to write and is a very prolific reader, gets very cross with me.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get traditional happy endings in this project. Oh no!

I know I know, you're not writing Bambi. smiley - rofl

Are you all happy writers? Is the project going well? smiley - biro

I'm interviewing you now. smiley - rofl

How do you all feel about your work, now it is almost complete?
