So... You've found Dan-Dare eh!?
"Dan-Dare, Pilot of the Future" science-fiction strip-cartoon series was created by the genius that was Frank Hampson, and it first appeared in issue number one of the weekly British boys' magazine "Eagle" on April 14, 1950. The series proved to be enormously popular and successful, in the 1950's at least rivalling the likes of Star Wars in the modern era, and it ran every week until the Eagle's initial run came to an end in 1969.
This enormous popularity was due in the most part to the groundbreaking full-colour animation-style illustrations produced by Frank Hampson and his team of artists, the likes of which had never been seen in a weekly publication in Britain before (or for that matter since). No doubt the entertaining and imaginative storylines, a consistent and meticulously laid out story universe, plus a memorable cast of characters, such as Dan's loyal companion Digby and evil arch-nemesis The Mekon, contributed to this popularity too.
Dan Dare has appeared in many different forms since the original 1950's and 60's era, most notably in the "2000AD" comic in the late 1970's and in a new version of the "Eagle" in the 1980's and 90's. Most recently (2002) he starred in his very own computer-generated animated TV series.
