I seem to remember the journey from Winchester to Durham taking about six hours, but from Winchester to London it only takes the one. And those are both direct.

Yes, the fact that it is Virgin explains that. South Central have a wonderful habit of usually being on time, or only a few minutes out.

I could go on about speed restrictions and so on- as well as the fact it may not take a straight line up to durham Durham's only 260 miles away from London.

I didn't doubt it would go by a roundabout route. I don't think any train goes that distance in a straight line. Or if one does, I haven't met it.
